Mostly just wanted a highly reliable truck that would fit in my garage. Until today, it has been. Hopefully, this is just a small set back...

I agree a Tablet or a phone would be a huge pain in the butt.

there are dozens of responses comparing the 2

simply illustrates folks expectations miss the target

    with coal burning diesels

stonkin 5-7 litre engine available to ALL

folk spend 25-65K for a Tacoma only to be DISsatisfied

as if they are being strong armed or held hostage

    i dont get it

Would a bad resistor show up in an error code? I just plugged in the scanner and it is not showing any problems. The truck has been running fine. Maybe I just chalk this one up to a one time deal???

No, it will not show as a code.

    No code for resistor.

If the part is fairly inexpensive, should I just go ahead and replace it? Or, should I just be prepared to "bypass" the resistor trick?

If you have a multi-meter, test the resistor rather than firing the parts cannon.

If it is starting just fine now, am I likely to get a faulty reading? Also, what amps should I get if it's normal? Many thank!

Simply replacing the resistor will tell you nothing.

If it were me this is what I would do:
I would make sure I have a jumper prepared that I could place across the connector that works. The next time I had the issue show up install the jumper. If it works great and I know the resistor is the issue. If it doesn't then I know that the resistor is not the issue.

Firstly you don't want to read amps on the resistor. Set it to the resistance mode and it will read in Ohms (Ω). I have to see if I can locate the resistance reading for a good resistor. Give me a few minutes.

This is what you look for on the fuel pump resistor reading the terminals on the resistor connector:

    FUEL PUMP RESISTOR INSPECTION

    1.INSPECT FUEL PUMP RESISTOR

    (a) Check the resistance.
    (1) Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between the terminals.

Resistance:0.71 to 0.75 Ω If the result is not as specified, replace the fuel pump resistor.

    Hi Jimmy,
So I just purchased the specific Toyota software for my iphone code reader. It showed two faults, both b2799 Engine Immoblizer System Malfunction. This makes sense, as my Taco started for a few seconds and then died. I have no idea why it would start with the same key 30 minutes later. Any idea? Any idea how to prevent this from happening again/fixing it?
    Many thanks!

Looks like it would have to be a wiring harness issue, Your Key Chip or the ECU.
This may require a dealer to look at the ECM Code and data.

    b2799 Code:

This DTC is output when one of the following occurs:
    1) the ECM detected errors in its own communications with the immobiliser code ECU;
    2) the ECM detects errors in the communication lines; or
    3) the ECU communication ID between the immobiliser code ECU and ECM is different and an engine start is attempted.
Before troubleshooting for this DTC, make sure no certification ECU DTCs are present.
If present, troubleshoot the certification ECU DTCs first.

    Causes:
•Error in communication between ECM and transponder key ECU, and in communication line
•Communication ID is different during communication with transponder key ECU

    Trouble Areas:
    •Wire harness and connector
    •ECM

The next time the issue occurs, take a look at the flashing key Light.
It’s the light the flashes when the key is not in the ignition. It’s next to the clock in my truck.
See if it is still flashing.

At this point, it’s beyond my level of diagnosis.
Hopefully you get it figured out.
If you do, let use know.

Key in and still flashing means it is not reading the key or reading it improperly. Do you have a second key you could use?

Do you suspect that it will happen again? I was reading, on another post, that it would only happen to some other guy if he sat is his car for an extended period of time with the key turned to the off position. That basically describes my trip to the grocery store. I was waiting in my Taco for a decent amount of time, with the key turned to the off position, waiting for the person to bring out my groceries. Maybe I just need to remember to remove my key from the ignition? Maybe somehow that made the key recognition fail due to some bug in the code that basically tells the Taco to stop reading the key data after some period of time. Thougths???

Possible... One thing for sure, Time will tell.

I wish you the best and hope it doesn't happen again. You could do the experiment and leave the key in again with it off and see what happens. If it is repeatable then you have your answer.

I have had the same problem over the last year to two. Never any check engine light. I did clean the maf sensor and it went away for a long time, over 6 months. Seems very random when it does happen. For a stretch in the beginning it was almost weekly. I havent checked the key light suggestion yet. I do know this. Ifyou cant get it to stay running, disconnect the battery and hold the key to start for 30 seconds. Once you reconnect it. It will start up. ( after one or two sensing cycles) If you ever figure it out send me a message!

This is why I hate the Engine Immobilizer System and Chipped Keys.

Yes, wife's and valet key. I'll keep them with me in case it happens again. Great idea!
