Don't waste money on gears, your boat's well within the factory parameters of the truck.

To tow, put on ECT. Shift to S mode, and set it to 4 - that will keep the transmission from going into the overdrive gears.

I'm on stock gears with 33" tires and weigh ~6k lbs, then tow a 4k lifted travel trailer. Just use the skinny pedal - don't be afraid to floor it on an onramp.

Well within your trucks towing capacity. Like others have said, 4th gear is correct for towing. With a tailwind or downhill 5th might be usable. Sixth, never while towing.

Yeah, but he has to pull the boat up the ramp too. I'd regear. I'd supercharge it too if you have the time and cash! You're never gonna complain that it has too much torque.

Is that an early 4runner in your pic? That thing looks pretty amazing.

What the Sh?? there's a sport mode????

This whole time I thought it was just drive and manual electronic shifting. Coming from twin turbos I just thought the truck was just super slow.

That is why I have the 2 low mod. Or just 4L if extra traction is needed and it’s straight enough.

I agree that I think it will pull it stock, but if his budget allows, I always vote more torque. I'd vote Coyote or LS-1 swap if that was a choice, not that I'm doing it.

Have you even towed with the Taco? You're suggesting he drop $3-4k installed for gears plus more than that for a supercharger before he's even tried towing it. It's just bad advice.

The bottom line is, it's a 2-ton boat, which is solidly in the MIDDLE of the Tacoma's towing capacity. He's just throwing money away if he regears or supercharges.

My driveway has an extremely steep grade with a tight curve and I still pull up it and back down it. I've driven all through the mountains of TN and GA, including through plenty of highways with runaway truck ramps, no problem, and I weigh more than this. Really, towing this much is not an issue.

If you are dead set on something like gears and already OV tuned, why not wait until the twin turbo's are released? You already paid for the turbo tune....

I’m surprised it “hangs in 4th gear” towing a 1500lb boat. My boat and trailer are about 2300lbs (18” fiberglass Larson with a 115hp outboard) and my 2016 a/t towed it in 5th/6th on flat ground at 70mph.

EDIT: generally I towed with ECT and 5th gear s-mode, but sometimes I would forget or get lazy and just tow in normal mode. It only downshifted to 4th gear for hills. Note that aerodynamics are very important, not just weight. My boat tows noticeably harder with the top off. I always have it on for hiway towing.

I tow all the time. My truck could use a regear with just 33s and armor. If he wants to spend the money for the power, what's the problem? It's not your money. R&P front and rear plus full master rebuild kits would run about 1k and would be nicer to your transmission if towing often. I'll install mine myself, like the last few regears I've done.

In addition, you are towing at or above your total max GVWR of 11360 if you weigh 6k and tow 4k. Truck, gear, fuel, passengers, tongue weight, plus trailer probably exceeds it. That's bad advice.

It will tow it, but it will squat a lot. Non TRD pro wont be as bad and if it is OV tuned that helps too as it wont try to constantly retard shift. Ive towed with mind many times under 2k and its quite stable, but even with that little weight you really notice its there and can tell the truck isnt designed to pull any more than a camery is as it practically needs to screem at 5mpg everywhere to keep up with the flow of traffic. If you dont mind going 55 everywhere though it seems to do fine. I think the TQ converter in the auto trucks must be about the size of a golf ball.

heh if only it would fit in the garage, I would have bought a way bigger truck.

At this point I’m enjoying having it paid off and figure if I could re-gear and do leaf packs for under $5k and continue to not have a payment for a year or two that’s probably be the best bet. That way I can afford the boat haha. Once I’ve had it a year or two then I’ll buy a bigger truck and hopefully keep the taco too. So while I want it to tow the boat safely I’m only going to do it for a few seasons before adding to my fleet. Getting a quote from 4wp on re-gear and will have them do I on leaf packs while under it.

It will tow it, if you set it up as the manual says. ECT/S mode 4th gear... Thats also the best way to climb hills in the mountains with these trucks as well....
