C A G E D. That's the system...some fucking suck, that's why there are alternatives like power chords. But ya, feel your pain.

My finger is just retarded or something. I can’t even strum just a clean barre with no other fingers down :pout:

You’ll get it. Just takes practice to strengthen the fingers.

Keep it fun brother! If something is frustrating you, work on something else, come back to it later...

I stopped playing regularly for like 2 weeks... lost all my finger clauses. Starting back from the beginning again :annoyed:

    Sometimes I don't play for 3 or 4 weeks.
Not because I don't want to but because sometimes life gets in the way.

Then when I go back to playing, it all feels brand new again. Only takes me about 2-3 hrs to get back in the groove.

I feel my playing is as good (or bad) as it was. Just my finger calluses are gone so I gotta take it slow again and rebuild them lol

Trigger finger put a dent in my playing. Have been seeing a hand surgeon to get it "straightened out"

I taught myself to barre by playing chords that used my first, 3rd and 4th fingers. Used my second finger as a helper to put pressure on my first finger. Helped build up strength, or at least the muscle memory. Still, I’ll usually slap my second finger over my first when it’s not on the G or the B string. Make sure your first finger is rolled so that the outer edge is putting pressure on the strings. Trying to barre flat fingered makes it harder than it needs to be. Just fwiw, from a guy who sucks, but loves the journey.

Thanks for the 2nd finger tip I’ll give it a try. I’ve been watching all the videos trying to find out what I’m doing wrong. I think My finger is rolled, but I always seem to have dead G, B, E strings. I’ve tried the “pull” method with your strum arm on the body and pushing with the finger, that don’t work. I gotta just keep at it and watch some more until I find a trick that works for me

No worries! Us beginners have to stick together and share the little lessons that helped us over a stumbling block. Once I got barring, it was all I wanted to do. Like I had accomplished all that I set out to learn as an aspiring guitarist. It’s a pretty big one in the skills bank, if you ask me. Pretty fun to play, and once it clicks, it’ll be with you for life. I don’t know how to link YouTube vids, but check out Lessons for Live, All Over You, and Weezer, Say It Ain’t So. Two great songs, IMO, from my teens. Mostly barre chords, and for the most part, just sliding over one fret, or moving fingers 2, 3, 4, up or down one string.

Just copy/paste the links for YouTube. I will check them out though. I’ve been trying to learn some songs that are just a few power chords, or at least their main riffs. I really need to find a song and learn it in its entirety though

I was trying to pick this one up yesterday, I could not figure out the intro though with the quick hammers. The rest is mostly barre chords which I found online but I can’t play them lol.

Cool! Thanks, I’ll give that a try. I also, for the most part, am just playing bits and parts of songs. My difficulty is strumming patterns. I can play something recognizable, but not technically correct. Not super in touch with the artistic side of my brain, so I struggle with rhythm.

I’m a total newbie still and trying to get down basic barres still. It doesn’t look too bad to learn but I’m slow lol.

we all were at one point. I started when I was around 10-12. Had a few years in my 20's where I stopped playing. Been trying to pick it back up again and even I feel like I'm trying to re-learn a lot of stuff. Just keep with it, especially if it brings you joy, and you'll get the hang of it.
