Family from Mass has a place in OOB - they weren't going, until a neighbor from up there called them and told them ain't nobody giving a crap, all the mass owners are coming up!

She's playing strong through the summer, which I think is fair. It was kind of comedic though, a few months back when rates were going down everywhere, including Maine and the rest of the area, and Mass, RI, CT, NH, etc started pushing toward opening back up, the same day RI announced going forward, she was like...nah. We're locking down harder because :confused::confused:
Hope it isn't too political, but hey, anything is better than her predecessor - regardless of your leanings, what a disaster :boink:

BUT hey, aside from political, yeah when I went up to OOB, nobody cared. Business as usual, carnival wasn't open but otherwise beaches were whatever. We didn't go down to the center of the universe (what I call the pier area in OOB) though.

Boston - major travel hub, cases can explode without much warning there. I get it, also, MA owns a ton of beach houses, there's a lot of strain hosting all those people when the supermarkets, etc are operating at a lower capacity given restrictions. It's not always about preventing the spread, I think part of it is if she opens the floodgates to MA "officially", you'll have a huge influx of people showing up, whose first stop will be Hannaford, and the gas station, etc etc that just can't handle that much demand on their limited operations. Let alone, further up north instead of down near Boston North.

o_O don't tell them about this one, then: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/27/nyregion/hamptons-chainsmokers-concert-social-distancing.html

Jokes aside - I did a road trip out to Michigan, down to the ozarks into Arkansas, out to Oklahoma, down into Texas, then out to Louisiana and up through the carolinas including Charleston, outer banks, and back up to home. Do you know how many masks I saw as I was at a state park along the coast of lake michigan? People sitting, enjoying the sunset (they let dogs in past 7). Do you know how many masks I saw going through Arkansas? (Mountain View, AK the exception, they were pretty good actually). Do you know how many masks I saw while walking the town lake trails in Austin? Driving around the outer banks, and IOP down in Charleston?

    :bananadead:

I thought RI was kind of winging it with the masks, until I saw the rest of the country. I'm not shaming the rest of the country, at all, but RI and New England has put in a lot of efforts to be this little cluster of good news in the northeast (map below). We, somehow, figured it out up here. We've done a lot, and worked pretty hard to keep cases limited - to open up and let that all go away because someone wants to leave their lake house in MA to go to their beach house in ME because it's hot this week, I don't have much sympathy.

...... I may have gone off on a little tangent there. :sorry::spy:

Trust me, we have definitely not been up in OGT every weekend for the past few months. And we absolutely have been getting 'rona tests prior to every weekend.

We've been to some restaurants/ bars that clearly don't give a shit about distancing. Bars basically full with everyone next to each other.

I think that would be some illegal orwellian type shit.

But you could just get off at exit 7 right before the Wells tolls and use rt. 1....

Yeah, I'm not allowed living in a rural town of 1600 in a county that hasn't seen a COVID related death in a month. Yet NYC is apparently fine. It's confusing and I think it's a case of people mistakenly treating the whole state as if it's a suburb of Boston even though everything west of I-91 is very different.

I just don't see what the issue really is with wearing a mask. I'd rather that then wear a ventilator, that's for sure. Not being paranoid but I do try to avoid crowds, wash my hands, and wear a mask. FWIW, my BIL though this whole COVID pandemic was more of a smoke show. He caught it. Wound up in the ICU. 29 days on the ventilator. Didn't make it to the 30th day. You just don't know who does or doesn't have it.

Saw an earlier discussion of the availability of 9mm. Cabelas has bulk Winchester “white box” in stock. 500 rounds for $120. Not the best product (dirty), but not too bad.

I agree, just put on the dam thing, over your nose too please. I sweat like a mofo, and I still put it on, and I don’t do it for me, I do it for everyone else.
That being said, I’m about to the point when I am some where that masks are required, and someone doesn’t have one one, I want to take mine off. I get so mad at this crap.

Don't get me wrong, we wear masks where required here/ up in Maine. But it's pretty dumb when you can take them off once you've sat down at a restaurant, and some places are clearly dis-regarding distancing requirements. Masks mainly contain any respiratory particles the wearer may expel. Most of the masks people are wearing do nothing to stop said particles once they are in the air as they don't form a positive seal on your face. Think about doing drywall or sanding in one of the cloth masks most are wearing. You're still getting the dust all up in your nose hole and face hole. At that point I guess it's up to the individual to decide whether they want to stay or go.

It's the normalization of it that creeps me out. Like the comments that "Asia does this all the time" and making them into a fashion accessory. The areas of Asia that do this frequently are ones where they're packed together like sardines--it isn't apples to apples to most places in the US, and not the type of life I think any reasonable person would really want. The media pushes it too--I saw a headline about them becoming permanent in MA. When you read the legislation, it clearly states it's in effect until the state of emergency is done. Many people won't read beyond the headline, and language like that will only make people who are against it even more against it. Heck, at first glance without other information it even makes me want to start a revolt.

I'd rather people treat it the way it is--as a means to an end: we do this for now to get through the pandemic, but it isn't forever.

Did you catch it! The insatiable need for other peoples money? Maybe you thought to tax them for using your chairs? The only cure is to go into the woods for a few weeks. Or maybe get on a dingy and get out into the middle of the lake for a day of fishing.

I looked it up at the start and SOE last for 45 days without renewing and I've never ever seen anything about Baker renewing or a vote on it. Also you can't just make rules and try to turn them into laws up willy nilly, they need to be voted on. The public is giving these pols A LOT of wiggle room right now. If they keep it up we will need to evict them.

I don't mind people coming up, my income isn't based on tourism, but a lot of my friends' and families' income is. What I do ask is that if you come up, keep in mind that a lot of grocery stores and other consumable supply stores are at the end of the delivery route for many small towns up here. Random things are still not available in stores when I hear from my friend in rural New York that they have those items at his local Hannaford. I think the issue is that people are still coming up but they are eating in more, versus eating in restaurants since some are still closed. The local grocery stores just aren't built for the demand.

TLDR, if you are coming up, bring some groceries.

If we don’t wear them, it will be a longer term thing. I said it before, I’ll say it again, we can stop this virus, the vaccine is within our behavior.

I hate the masks but am really not against a lot of the other things that COVID brought. I'm all about curb-side pickup, I don't want to have to deal with people. Personal space is back! Traffic has been really awesome and I actually have enjoyed working from home. I work in a position that generally does not offer that as an option. I'm starting to have to go back in more and more now but I think a lot of positions that never before offered working from home will continue to do so since they've seen some people are more productive when they're home and happy vs. sitting in a crappy office (hopefully they look at the economic side of it also, less office space for them to rent, employees don't spend as much money commuting and paying for parking)

My company has been very progressive in the work from home market, but I think this will spur the higher ups to look more into units with low numbers of it and probe more. One of my old managers was very against it no matter who wanted to do it, just an old fashioned ballbuster type.

Man, first week of April we were called back to on site (it was Bs approach too. Plant manager sent an email that started with the typical corporate speak “challenges etc etc” so you brush it off, mid way through like the 3rd paragraph it gets into calling us back to on site).

we work manufacturing I get it, felt a little premature though, approach could have been better. Oh well. Almost august now that’s water under the bridge. Was kind of nice though, in a weird way. Gave a sense of normalcy, even people I don’t enjoy talking to, it gives a psychological boost to actually interact with people. I’ve been WFH for the past few days since my test results still aren’t back, it’s been nice to set up my computer and work outside all day in the nice weather but in the winter after a few weeks I was going stir crazy. Needed that home work separation. But my future job choices I might give it a whirl, I think sans pandemic it could work well for me.

When you talk about drywall, your in a dust cloud and need the seal to stop from breathing in the shit. The purpose of the mask in the COVID world, is just stopping your water droplets from traveling as far, in fact I would argue most if not all stick to the mask. The shields folks are using, those are useless. Bandannas that are hanging open at the bottom, useless.
