People forget that these are working trucks. I just hit 97k on my 2017. I use it for leisure and work. It cant fail me and thats why I have a toyota.

I must barely 'work' my truck at all, at roughly 15k a year.

Op, time to pull your engine, do the repair, take lots of photos and make a write up! These trucks are finally getting old enough/high enough mileage for this forum to actually start turning into a productive one with lots of write ups and good information.

Funny, my wife had a 2015 RAV4 that just developed a severe transmission and oil leak at just 77k miles, we also traded in instead of fixing it ($2500-3500 repair) but we got $10.5 trade in (COVID!) so we got another $15k SUV instead with only 20k miles. Made no sense in doing the repair at that point.

 

Lemme see if I got this right...You can fix a 4-banger, but a 6 cylinder motor is beyond your mechanical comprehension? Dude, same shit, just two more holes with parts in them.

oh, we just put 10k miles on the 4Runner in about 17 days, does that help?

 

Except the main difference is I don’t have to take the engine out to replace a simple timing cover gasket

People in this thread actually think a guy putting 50k miles a year on his truck has the time to do the repair work himself? Lol

And before the OP replied with all the other issues he is having I would have said that a vehicle with that many miles will have constant issues after the first big one pops up. If you are doing 50k miles a year you are all but gaurenteed to keep breaking down when you are never close to home. Time to replace it and get the highest millage warranty you can buy.

 

Some of us work, 60k+ For my 1st gen, got paid my regular salary +$.54/mile street and an extra $.50/offroad mile to do it also.

I also sold it at +250k miles still running good and I never had any issues with it. 1st gens were very dependable trucks.
(It’s still my Avatar until my 2017 proves itself, so far so good...)

 

Glad I read through before replying. May be worth adding this to your first post. If the transmission wasn't going as well I would have suggested paying an extra $1000 for a fresh engine to be installed. Best of luck in your new truck search!

 

Yeah, you need to shop around and find a good tire shop that also has certified mechanics. Jasper used to yank and rebuild an entire engine for less than that. You cant do a simple gasket change to the timing cover by dropping the radiator, the whole engine has the be yanked?

 

Well that kinda sucks. I use my truck for my sales route, was kinda hoping to get to 200k but maybe I’ll look at trading in closer to 100-120k. Sitting at 60,500 miles today after 3 years.

 

Doesn't anyone ever take a Saturday morning oil change and morph it into a 3-hour bolt torqueing session to head this kinda' shit off at the pass anymore? ESPECIALLY the parts that are there to RETAIN OIL? None of yew ever owned a first Gen GM V8 with its exquisitely terrible valve covers? Almost anyone in the 70's-90's had to change out the valve cover gaskets bi-yearly, or otherwise inhale burning oil fumes from the exhaust manifolds. So we got good at changing all manner of hardened oil gasketing, and torqueing bolts regularly. That's just the way it was. And you know whut? WE LIKED IT! Back in that day out of necessity we had to work on our vehicles often, so out of necessity if our girlfriends wanted to spend much time with us they got good at turning a wrench or holding a backup for us and, seemingly, they liked to get dirty! In more ways than one. And roll us one when our hands got too greasy. Those girls are now your mother, or grandmother. Son.

So go roll your grandpa a fatty, point to your Taco and tell him you got some oil leaks. Then stand back. We got this...
