Guys with BFG KO2s. Check your tires.

So few weeks ago i was checking my tires and noticed some splitting/cracking on sidewall of one tire. Then, i started checking the rest of the tires and realized they all have it, some tires have it worse than others.

The tires were installed only 2 years ago(not sure when they were made) and have only 17k miles on them. The thread looks great but the sidewall not so much. I am a bit dissapointed with these bfgs.

I do go camping/offroad quite a bit in the summer but nothing too crazy, so i know its not from my driving.

I did go back to the dealer for inspection and they got back to me today. BFG will take my old ones and pay 66% for new tires, which i think is kind of fare. Once i found those splits, i honestly felt a bit uncomfortable driving on them and i really wanted 265/70/17 in C load anyways, so i guess it worked out ok.

The splits in pics look minor but they are pretty much in every groove on the sidewall lugs. Some are bigger/longer than others and you could actually spread it with your fingers. Ill give bfg another chance, otherwise there is not nuch choice if i want C load and 17".

Anyways just wanted to give you guys heads, in case someone else is having that issue.

 

I’m not making light of the situation.
But it’s pretty common on all tires. The older the tire, the more A you’ll see it.
Next time you are out, take a look at other people tires. I’m betting you’ll see this quit a lot.

How old are your tires?
There should be a DOT date code on the tire.
It’s 4 digit

First 2 numbers are the week of the year.
Last 2 digits are the year.

example: 3020 - Is 30th week Of 2020

Those are 2-3 year old tires. Pretty common especially here with the heat. 2-3 years is all I get out of tires anyway.

 

I have a strong dislike for BFG KO2s, but even I cannot fault them for that. That's 100% normal and fine to drive on

 

Actually i did and none of the BFG KO2s I saw lately have those issues, and i looked at some tires that were clearly more worn than mine. My buddy has a set thats been installed for 1.5 years, looks perfect. I did not check how old they are. I would go now, but my truck is sitting at work right now.

If BFG is buying my tires back, clearly they think there is something wrong. Like i said, the splits look minor in the pics. If you saw them in person you will know what i mean, some are quite long. Not normal at all for 17k miles. I had tires go 50k miles with none of this shit, this is not my first set of tires on my pickups.

 

Age affects that more than miles. Whats the date on the sidewall?

So if thats normal, why would BFG buy back the tires from me? Because if it was, that would be the first thing they will tell me.

 

That doesn't look bad at all. My old Falkens were like that after 2 years, my friends Nittos are the same way as well. Pretty normal...I'd love to see a 2 year old tire that doesn't look like that honestly.

The actual thread is perfect, soft and no chipping or rotting, thats why i am a bit confused. Its only splitting in those areas.

 

yup, DOT code will tell you how long it sat on a shelf before u bought them. only way to tell if its age related

 

interesting. None of my tires after 3-4 years looked like that. My duratracs looked brand new after 2 years.

 

That's okay, justice is overrated anyway, just a buzz word for old folks. Who knows why they're taking them back, good will, cust retention strategy, new guy on the job.... I'd have told you to pound sand. My KO2s looked pretty shitty after a year but still had too much tread depth for me to get rid of them, although I desperately wanted to since they performed like crap, they ended up lasting 3 more years unfortunately.

 

Man, i had my scorpions ATR for 4 years and none of this cracking/splitting shit. The thread was gone though. My duratracs looked brand new after 2 years on my previous truck. I was kind of expecting the same out of these tires.

 

I actually do like how they perform. Silent on hwy yet do great off road. Not the best in snow, but it doesnt snow like crazy here.

 

Common problem for BFGs and Michelin tires. These softer compound rubber tires required lots of regular use to stay supple.

Sounds like you have the wrong type of tires for your application (low mileage per year)

 

Interesting, never heard that before. My truck sits 5 days a week, but I drive quite a bit on the weekends. Other guy at work parks his car like me and has michelin tires. His tires are perfectly fine and are older. I dont get it.

 

One day at work and I can post a dozen picture examples of this with date codes included.

Give your tires another two years at your current rate of driving and they will look awful. Fortunately, I see no cause for concern, I wouldn't rush out and change those anytime soon.

Michelin has the absolute best rubber in the business...if you drive a lot.

 

Oh, and if you don't believe me, hop on some RV forums and check what the retired crowd is saying about the michelins. Lots of picture examples too

 

This is really bad no matter how much you drive. Tires shouldn't do that.
