I'm guessing everyone knows what I mean, but just in case...engine always sounds like it's low on oil, and in fact people ask regularly if it's low on oil lol. Anyone have any thoughts on what causes that? (BTW, it's not low on oil :) )

I've tried putting the 2 rubber washers under the...............whatever it is on the driver's side of the engine, kind of behind the oil fill.

    Any other ideas?

It's not a worry so much, just an annoyance, like you said. If I knew a relatively cheap way to stop it, I would. I'm not putting thousands into it, for sure lol.

This would drive my OCD crazy. Very glad mine does not have this infamous tick

Mine does this occasionally but only in hot weather. I never hear it in the winter. After research I've started running premium fuel only and that helped big time. Maybe try that.

Turn up the radio. Louder exhaust. Ear plugs. Permethrin. All git rid of ticks.

Pinging is bad and it’s not the same as ticking. If it ain’t ticking it ain’t a 1GRFE.

it’s just a noisy motor. Loud timing chain, chatty valves and noisy injectors.

exhaust also likes to develop pinhole leaks or leaky donuts which makes it worse.

LOL, I can live with it. Like I said, unless it's a few bucks to fix it, it aint gonna happen anyway. Still curious what it is, but it sounds like it's a combination of things within the engine so.......no biggie. Thanks folks

I barely noticed that ticking when my truck was new..... haven't even heard it at all for several years. It's actually very quiet.

I grew up with muscle cars in the Sixties. Nothing like the sound of a high-output V8 with solid lifters clattering away.
Especially when the sound is amplified by a set of headers. Ah, sweet music to the ears!

I just noticed mine the other day. 2015 4.0L with 70K miles. Normally I'm in the car when its idling and I can't hear it. So I'm thinking sea foam first and maybe thicker oil. It was definitely an issue on my (now gone) bmw m50. This one is new to me so I don't know yet.

Wouldn't recommend that, Toyota spec'd this engine to run on 5w30 and there and plenty of people out there running many hundreds of thousands of miles on 5w30. The tick is normal sound for this engine as stated above and is in no way indicative of a problem or excessive wear.
