Never played with it either, but I had to look...and this is what Wikipedia says,
"Alcantara is the name given to a composite material used to cover surfaces and forms in a variety of situations and applications. It is similar to other composition fabrics such as Ultrasuede or Magilite.
The material was developed in the 1970s by Miyoshi Okamoto, a scientist working for the Japanese chemical company Toray.[1] In 1972, a joint venture between Italian chemical company ENI and Toray formed Alcantara SpA in order to manufacture and distribute the material.
Alcantara is created via the combination of an advanced spinning process (producing very low denier bi-component "islands in the sea" fibre) and chemical and textile production processes (needle punching, buffing, impregnation, extraction, finishing, dyeing, etc.) which interact with each other"

Looks very nice, but from the above definition, looks like one could get punched, buffed, impregnated, extracted or turn color by messing with it!!

It's is basically suede only it does not suffer the ill effects that suede does. It is much more durable and stain resistant. Plus, it does not fade.

besides sending it out or buying a set of WO seat covers. does anyone know where you can get a cover for your center console. i really like this one but dont want to send it out, id rather just order a slip on cover online

It's custom. They do a lot of Subaru's. I always wanted them to do my wrx but i ended up selling that for the taco. I sent them my console lid, they covered it and sent it back to me.
