Chevy Colorado G80 axle swap

Has anyone entertained an axle swap from a 4x4 ChevroletColorado with 3.73 or 4.10 gears onto a 2nd Gen Prerunner? I used to own a Chevy Colorado and I loved the G80 locker set up it had. I think I'll take some measurements, but it appears the axle width is pretty close and the Colorado has a six lug set up. The only issue I see is brake lines, E-brake, and drive shaft. Any thoughts?

Just an idea to throw out there for everyone.

 

You're talking about a rear axle swap just to get a locker?

1. I think the taco is a few inches wider than the Colorado.

2. Probably easier to swap with a Taco offroad axle that's got a locker. Easier bolt up.

a gov-bomb??? i would never entertain tthat thought. They are notoriously unreliable.

Better off with a no-slip, lock-rite, or ARB. Probably cheaper with any of those routes too.

 

I just liked the auto lock style of the Chevrolet, no electric, no push button, no air, and extremely reliable (my experience). I had the push button differential lock on my 2001 Tacoma and was disappointed to find out this feature had been dropped on these newer Prerunners for the LSD set-up. The old style was extremely useful on boat ramps. BJMOOSE meantioned the width. Perhaps a wheel spacer to compensate. They are built by Eaton, a company that has been around a long time.

The right way to lock the rear is ARB. It is on demand and can be turned ON when YOU want it. Meaning much less stress on the driveline components.

Detroit, or Power-Trax are automatic lockers. Those are ON most of the time. For example Detroit locker locks the wheels when there is power transmitted from the engine, in other words most of the time the rear is locked. That has TWO major disadvantages...

1, More stress on the rear

2, It will chew up tires faster

I dont think you're able to swap out the locker from the OR model into the sport or LSD Diff's... there 2 differant sizes from i've seen.. I think the OR is an 8" and the LSD units are 8.4"

The only bad part about ARB is the cost...

ARB locker - $800

Compressor $100-$200

Professional install - $100-$300?

So you will end up paying $1100-$1300 for ARB locked rear end

Powertrax - $300

Detroit - $500

 

Not sure what year they started but auto-
LSD was standard on all 2nd gen 09' and up Prerunners. Might double check on yours. They may have started earlier.
