Buying Used Icon Vehicle Dynamics Coilovers - Good deal?

I'm not sure of the longevity of the parts or if it's a good deal.

Someone has as set for sale used Icon Vehicle Dynamics Coilovers. No info on total miles. Recently rebuilt by a reputable shop with 0 miles after that.

He is asking $800, I think they are normally about $1300.

I know that Icon is overpriced, but is this a reasonable price for used parts?

 

How do the shock look? Do they look beat up or in good condition?

 

I wouldn't consider Icons to be overpriced, where'd you get that from?

If they were recently rebuilt, with a receipt to go with, I'd gladly pay the $800

Plenty of people buy used up 2.5 coilovers for $600-750 with no issue. Some may need a rebuild even which would be on the $600 range

I've never run Icon, so I can't speak for the performance aspect. But I see Icon everywhere and have become the standard. So if they aren't charging a premium, the should be.

They look used but not beaten, pics are attached. . . hopefully. One of my concerns would be the mileage on the springs, they eventually sag.

 

With the exception of being a bit dirty, they look to be great.

Yes springs will sag over time, but if they're the original springs etc it's safe to say they've got plenty of life left judging by the pics/condition.

 

I bought mine well used for about that price. I had them rebuilt by a performance shop and they were good as new.

 

Those don't look bad I would look into a rebuild kit since there's no knowing the mileage on them. And if those are the original springs try them out first to see how much sag they have and then maybe look to swap them later.

 

I wouldn't worry to much on the springs. $800 is a pretty good deal and if they have been recently rebuilt, that's a huge plus.

 

Just be aware of the differences in the valving, and if the digressive valving on ICONs suits your driving style.

Fox/King = linear
ICON/Bilstein 5100's = digressive

You can always get them custom valved, but that's also another cost to consider.

 

They've got about 60K on them before the rebuild.

I'm in Norcal so desert running is not much of an option, the stock valve will probably be fine.

 

What do you guys run for the rear shocks. These are 0-3" but the rears that are paired are 1.5". I realized that most people want a "level" truck but 1.5" seems a bit much. I think my old Rancho's are 2" shocks.

 

I'm running the matching Icon 2.5" that came with the front coilovers in the kit.

 

My concern is the shackles allow a lot of flex in the rear and don't want the shocks to be the limiting factor.

 

What leaf pack do you run?

I've got an OME Dakar leaf pack running Fox 2.0 universal in the rear.

It's a stock 20 year old leaf pack. Even with the +2.5" puck in the front and 1.25" shackles in the back it's pretty much back to stock height. So I was thinking go 3" in the front with coils and +1" leafs.

The shackles allow more travel. The first picture is stock. The second one is with the shackles and the third is with shackles + 32s. I can just about drop the 32 below the body, and it will stuff up in the wheel well too. The stock 31's sill had about 1+" left. I never measured it but I think is 2"-3" of more travel.

 

Eh, to an extent but a new leaf pack will give you even better flex without the bandaid that is your shackle.

 

What are “g-outs?”

 

It's what happens when you hit a big dip in the road/trail at speed. Like a roller coaster. So, you're going fast enough to work the suspension. Vs. hitting a pothole or a rock or something.

It's all about how quickly the suspension needs to react. With a pothole or rock (at speed) the suspension needs to react extremely quickly. A g-out is a much slower reaction time.

It's a G-out because you feel the G's like a fighter pilot.
