No idea what it is. But yes. Might be nothing, might not. Always err on the side of "oh, crap" with that sort of stuff.

Maybe I'll plan a reroute but leave this on the table if people are feeling adventurous.

I put stock friendly hand in hand with having an inexperienced driver. I'm sure there are plenty of experienced off road drivers with stock trucks but, to me, when I see stock friendly I think 'hey, that looks like fun' and you get goobers like me with extremely limited off road experience on the trip.

I'd report it with the photo and let them sort out what it actually is. I'm no expert, but it resembles the Asian Longhorned Beetle enough to maybe have the experts take a look.

My offroad experience is limited as well, and we will have a couple of folks there (@mach1man001 for example) who have a lot more experience, but I don't really know what the rest of the mix will be like. I'm sure with proper spotting even an inexperienced driver can get through it, hell Rob talked me through this in a bone-stock truck on my first ever trail ride:

Looks doable in a stock vehicle to me. it'll really be dependent on how wet it is and what tires people have. But Doesn't looks like anything you need to be lifted or armored for.

Looks to be a Sawyer Beetle. It's a borer, mostly sticks with Pines, but only goes after wood that is already dead or dying so it's not really a threat to any forests

Edit- not that they don't scream bloody murder when you pick them up, though.

I agree. If you're bone stock and inexperienced, make sure your first outing is with a good group of people who will actually help you through it. I really appreciated that when I did a RI run with Rob, John and a few others. It was good to see how the experienced guys tackled obstacles and have patient people to spot me through obstacles that are relatively simple but not something I was used to.

Yeah, I went out in the RI spot fully stock in the spring, went up some hairy stuff, had a spotter and the truck did fine - walked the line after and was surprised. These trucks are pretty good stock. I'm stock + sliders, will probably ultimately be sliders + skids and that's about it.

If August keeps this up, it'll be dry as hell out there. I'm on stock tires, if I air down should be fine.

My biggest concern is time. This will be right at the tail end of the last day, which I suppose makes a game-time call easier (ie: if we get there by 12-1, and have plenty of daylight left, we'll do it, otherwise we'll talk about taking a route around on a safer road).

We'll see how we all feel when we get there. We're also hitting the Dorset Caves on the same day.

Honestly, that's my issue also. I grew up with dirt bikes and ATVs where you just hit it with some speed and let the chips fall where they may. It works, to some extent, off road but usually ends up breaking shit and gives you a lot more trail damage (neither of which I wanted for my daily driver). If I were to get into off roading, I've come to the conclusion that I really need to get a dedicated beater rig to do it the way I want.

The straight up the hill route? I can see it on the map, if we can actually find it on the road though...:notsure:
