Welcome to my next hell, need suggestions.

Soooooo......while taking off my front bump stops, this freaking happened.


Yup, sheered the bolt in half. It is in a tight spot with the LCA right underneath it. I hve been trying to hit it with PB blaster in preparation. Any suggestions on getting it out? I don't have any experience drilling a bolt out and I don't want to damage the internal threads.

 

Following, I'm sure I'll experience this too!

 

Pb plaster, heat and a strong ass pair of locking pliers is what I would try first, seems like there is just enough thread hanging out for pliers to bite on to. Maybe you’ll get lucky and it will loosen so you won’t have to drill it out.

 

Well that stinks

 

Did it start turning, then seize up? If so grab it with Vise Grips and turn it back in a 1/4 to 1/2 turn. Spray it from inside the mount and work it in and out until it starts to loosen. If it straight up snapped, best of luck using vise grips. Though I would still try to thread it back in first. Also vibration is your friend. Tap on the bolt with a hammer. it might help loosen it up and get lube in-between the threads.

This exact thing happened to me when I was taking off the OEM bumps for Superbumps. I was PISSED!

No amount of spray lubes, or heat, or pliers did the job, after an hour or two of jacking with it. Ended up dropping the LCA out of the way, remove lower shock bolt, LBJ bolts, loosen the cam bolts. Drilled forward into the remaining bolt, and then it eventually broke itself free and spun up into the mount. I had only drilled into it about 1/4" or so before, I will assume, friction heat and whatever remnant of PB actually started to work.

 

I hope you don't to do the above since you just the new LCA's and Alignment Cams, and Cam Gussets put in with a new alignment. Good Luck Jared.

 

I didn't budge at all. I just stared to twist it off and the whole thing snapped off.

 

Should I heat the bolt itself of the surrounding mount?

If it sheared in half, that sucker isn't coming out. Luckily the backside of where that threads into is wide open. So, unbolt the LCA from the spindle and the lower shock mount and let it swing down out of the way. Drill it out, and then just put a new nut on the backside.

 

Heat it and pb blaster. At different times of course. Thread a nut onto the existing bolt and then weld the nut onto the existing threads.

 

It is open. I used a 1/4" bit I think, something just a bit smaller than the bolt/stud. Saved the nut that way

 

Screw on a nut to the end of the bolt and weld in the center. the heat from the welder will lossen it up and u can use a socket to remove it. Well if u have access to a welder.

 

I would do both, spread the heat around the bolt/bolt hole.

 

Heat the surround, beat on the stub of the bolt with a hammer to shock it and keep spraying it down with penetrant from the inside. Do it a few times, then grab the stub with a vice grip and try to tighten it a bit, then loosen it. Basically you are trying to shock the corrosion/rust loose in the bolt threads.

I had this happen 2x on different trucks when putting on superbumps. Propane torch, Seafoam Deep Creep and Kroil. Hitting it with the biggest ball pein. Did it over a few days. Spraying it down, heating and hitting. When I grabbed it with the vice grip a couple of tighten/loosen moves and it came right out.
