I hadn't heard about all that, not very NHL like to be taking those shots at each other. I couldn't find any info on what really went on our caused it. I was going for the yotes this year, hope this stays off the ice.

It's a long story. A couple of reporters in Buffalo have supposedly solid information on what happened. John Chayka, the coyotes GM and President of Hockey Operations, requested to be allowed to talk to other teams in February after his agent was approached by another NHL team for his services. The Phoenix ownership obviously didn't want to let him go talk to other teams right after renewing him and okaying his vision of the next five years but caved when he promised it would be just talk. Well, the team that talked to him was Buffalo and supposedly they made him a sky high offer. Again, all in rumor at this point, apparently he would be given an ownership share in the Sabres and power over "other sports ventures." That likely meant he would have a major role with the Buffalo Bills or, possibly, given some ownership in that team as well. Basically the Sabres ownership is desperate enough to get back to the playoffs they decided massively overpaying a GM who did an okay job with the Coyotes would be preferable to any other option.

Chayka went back to Phoenix ownership, told them he was done (sometime in the last month or so), and when they didn't cave this time he just quit. The reason this is going to turn nasty is because there is a clause in his contract that says he can't quit the Coyotes GM role in order to take the same role with another team. In order for that to be legal he has to hold a higher role, which would be hard to do unless Buffalo really is going to pay him double, make him GM and President of Hockey Operations, and also make him an owner/advisor to the Buffalo Bills. Even if they do that the NHL could say it's a contract violation. This is going to come down owner versus owner with Bettman in the middle. No one wants that for the league.

I mean it's easy to get around by making him President of Hockey Operations or VP. How the hell did he even become a GM at 26

It was great to watch. very strange with no fans. I think hockey is the strangest sport to see with an empty arena. looking forward to these playoffs.

Without over generalizing it's probably safe to assume the older a team is the harder the break will effect them. Neither the Blues nor the Blackhawks are young teams yet so I suspect that was one of the worst looking games of the exhibition pool.

By the end of the Leafs and Habs game they looked pretty close to being at regular season strength. Playoffs will be fine but I'm curious how they'll be called. Will it be the "unless you're dead no call," rules we usually see come playoff time or the actual rulebook?

Actually the Hawks have gotten much younger over the last few seasons and are now the youngest squad in the NHL at 25.6 years old average age.

I do hope we see the usual playoff rule adherence.

Though I am a huge Habs fan, I don’t see either TO or Montreal going far. The Leafs always fold up like a cheap suitcase, and the Habs can’t score. Even though Price is a good goalie, I believe the Pens firepower will be too much.

As a Canadian, it is nice to see as many Canadian teams in the Playoffs, and having the games played in Canadian rinks.

I am just glad we are getting to see any playoffs at all! Go Habs!

I've never seen any consistency, they do tend to let them play come playoffs, but it's still a shit show of inconsistency.
