Why does the phone have to be plugged in via USB to the head-unit in order to use Apple Maps or whatever it’s called. Navigation. I can make calls via BT wirelessly, but I have to plug my phone in to use my phones navigation? I don’t get it. Am I missing something?

You’re not missing anything. It’s just the way it works. Today I noticed while plugged in I had both Car play and BT to the Entune. Obviously don’t need both but found it interesting. The song playing on my phone could be seen via both apps on the truck display. Maybe that’s why Carplay is plug in only?

It’s an Apple thing. Wireless car play needs Both dual band WiFi and Bluetooth to work (not WiFi on the phone). So the built in WiFi / hotspot in the 2020 Tacoma is probably not compatible with CarPlay. There are probably some other specific hardware issues as well knowing Apple. Many manufacturers don’t support wireless CarPlay. Google it, all the info is out their if you’re that interested.
