how many people just ordered 4 wheels and tires?

I did, mainly b/c of cost. So I have an issue. 2018 OR with factory spare. My TPMS light came on. Went to Pepboys and the tech said my 4 tires are all good...35 psi and sensors all reading. Could not get a read on spare tpms. I thought spares had TPMS sensors. Anyway, it's probably a matter of time until the ECU cant get a read on the 5th sensor and the indicator light comes back on. Has anyone else experienced this and/ or what would you do?

 

4 for me. I don't even know if a 285 will fit where the spare is stored.

I'm thinking 2008 or 2009 was the last year they put sensors in the spares. Unless they started doing it again with 3rd gens.

The batteries in the sensors typically are good for 8-10 years. I've heard of some going bad sooner, and all 5 are still working after 13 years in my 07. I'm certain they will die soon.

I wouldn't buy new wheels just because a $15-$25 part goes bad. Next time I need new tires for my Tacoma I'll order new sensors and take them to the tire store. They will install them free when mounting new tires. Otherwise plan to spend $10-20 per tire for them to break down tires and install them.

Unless you were real unlucky I doubt the sensors are bad on a 2018.

 

I fit a 34 inch tire in the spare tire spot with a sledge hammer anything is possible lol

 

I got 4 new wheels and tires with TPMS...didn't touch the factory spare though. i'll ask in 3rd gen forum if there is a spare tpms

 

I don't get any reading on my 3rd gen spare so I don't think they add them. Although I've never tried adding the tire and re-syncing but I still don't think it has one. After all, it is just a spare.

 

thanks something triggered my tpms indicator. All 4 new tires are good at 35psi and sensors reading good. Only thoughts are spare has something to do with it

 

My last truck had an issue with the TMPS where the sensors just wouldn't talk to the computer. I decided not to bother with it after every tire shop told me they weren't able to fix it. It wasn't a Toyota, but I imagine TPM systems don't work that differently. A dealership would probably be your best bet.

Could it be possible you have too much air? I wouldn't think it would matter, but my truck recommends 30 PSI in the tires when cold, but I've also never had an issue when the tires read even 38 psi on the dash during hot days.

 

i didn't have any issues with my stock tires. In fact the dealership would always inflate to like 38psi every service for some reason...of course they would heat up to like 41psi when driving. I would air down but same story after each service. anyway, no issues. Now I have 4 new wheels and tires I've got issues. They were working fine for about 3 weeks, went to the mountains and the indicator light came on. I tried researching if altitude would be an issue but apparently not at Shenandoah's 4k altitude.

 

I should also add that I couldn't get the tpms to reset using the button or by disconnecting the battery. Which is why I'm trying to troubleshoot this b/c its a p.i.t.a to get a pro to reset the ecu.

 

This is a long shot, but could there be a compatibility issue between the new sensors and the computer? I wouldn't think they'd be that different.

 

You have to goto a tire shop. They need to program the new TPMS ID's into your Tacoma. The truck ECU needs to be programmed with the new sensors.

 

35psi seems high for a Tacoma.

 

My door panel suggests 30 when cold, but that doesn't stop the dealership from filling them to 35.

 

My winter wheels have no sensors I just ignore the light.

My buddy has a third gen and he fit a 285/75r16 up under his bed. It was a tight fit but he didn't have to modify anything to make it fit

 

the door panel sticker psi is usually a less than ideal pressure because the factory value gives a softer, cushier ride. They are less worried about tire longevity.

 

Not so sure about that. In my last truck, I ran the tires at the PSI the dealership gave me when I bought it (35psi). The tire wear showed they were overinflated and they didn't last very long. Granted, they were winter tires, but still. The recommendation was 30psi and I had much better luck with that.
