Does any one else have a number of small outward dents on there tailgate.

I have 5 (that I count now) around the middle 1/3 of my tail gate that you can see in the reflection I can just barely feel 2 of them when I run my fingers over the surface. As I said they are all outward so they couldn't have been caused by something or someone hitting my tailgate.

I just got the truck a few months ago and it kind of pisses me off seeing all these little dents every time I walk to my truck. Could it be similar to the "weak tailgate" issues the '5-07's had? The most weight I have had on the tailgate is my self standing on it and maybe a couple bags of cement. What would cause these dents? Is this something that Toyota would fix if I make a big enough of a fuss about it?

I am willing to bet, that those are from some one pushing on the tailgate. Those marks are from the glue/brace on the inside.
You know, when some one sits on the bumper and pushes with their back against the tail gate, and it bent the panel around the support of the brace at the glue spots.
A PDR tech can get those out.

LOL... Its actually Manie short for Hermanus... but thats a whole other story...

How much would some thing like that run me, and then once its fixed is there anything that can be done to prevent it from happening again?

Cost, could be $125 up to maybe $200. I went back to the thread on the bending tailgate, there is a photo of the inside of a tailgate, definitely the brace is causing the up-points. Might have to cut the glue and re-glue,hard to say without seeing it in person.

How to prevent it in the future? Don't push on it, seriously do not push on any part of the body. Always push on the handles, the bodies just aren't that strong :(

Good theory. Welcome to toymerica. Nothing like that on my japanese made toys.

im not a pdr tech, but I played one for a while (bought a kit used off a guy as I am wont to do) and i dont see how you could do that pdr. IF it is as you say. Regardless they can't push IN dents on your paint. Well not generally what they do. If You didn't mind repainting the gate.. a shrinking disk and a dolly would do it.

theres a panel on the inside for strength. its mounted to the metal really good. i got a dent there and my pdr guy said he could not get the panel off so it was impossible to make it perfect like it is brand new. maybe just get a big sticker to throw over it.

Classic case of not knowing what the hell you are talking about.

You said " Regardless they can't push IN dents on your paint", The dent is not in the paint, the dent is in the panel.
What is the difference if the dent is "in" or "out"? Either way it is metal moved, does not make difference.
I am glad you made an a temp to do PDR, and you beleive that trumps my 16 years of experience.

Case by case, just because your pdr guy could not get a dent out is irrelevant, different deal, it is totally possible to repair this.

you push on the outside? I do that ... but not PDR. I've not seen the tool to do this, without removing paint that is. Considering how bad the PDR messes up the inside of the panel I can't imagine.. must be a whole different process I've never seen or heard of.
I do shape metal for fun and profit, but like I said, it was a limited foray. I've had it done to my car (hail damage) a couple times, and the always scraped the paint off the inside of the body.
Though thinking about it.. if the entire panel was moved inward and left those high spots.. I guess it would be working the whole panel out. But if there's something behind those, it can't be massaged back into place. But I will admit there are a lot of tricks of which I am not aware. Point is, I've never seen true paintless dent removal. There's always coating removed somewhere. Maybe you're the only one doing it right.

And ya never know.. I do know people that have been effing shit up their entire career... I dont make a snap judgment like that.

See, now you are admitting you are unaware of the process. I knock down high spots all the time, as a matter of fact, any one with experience knows how to do it.
My point was that the internet is a great place to get information, be it correct or not, and when people just post incorrect information, I must call them on, for everyone's benefit.

well he could get out every other dent to perfect condition including the ones that were in other spots on the tailgate even where the "bend" is along the bottom. but he worked on the dent where the square pad is on the inside of the tailgate for an hour and it just would not "move". but your the expert I guess so everyone shall listen.

do you have any experience with dents where the support pad is?

if these dents arent on or near the pad they should come out easy, I had my entire bed creased out in the middle above the wheel well and my pdr guy knocked it down from the outside to perfect condition

it's a common problem Manie. I thought they had fixed this issue. Mine has the same dents. I would take it to the dealer and see if they will fix it under warranty.

I did not discount your PDR guy,nor did I claim I am an expert, I simply stated it is a different case. Just because your guy could not get out one of your dents does not mean the OP's dent cant be repaired.

Yes I have lots of experience removing dents in the glue spots, sometimes it works and some times it does not.
