    That should keep it looking nice for many years to come. I bet it will make the natural colors pop. As nice as everything else has come out, I would coat everything on the inside too. Makes it easier to clean or keep clean.
    Edit: I just love the natural look of the grain. Forget about painting over it. Clear satin is the way to go.

    Started cutting and prepping the timber rafters today , got 4 cut and sanded , and a 5th cut but not sanded yet , so will definitely have all 6 ready mid morning tomorrow then I'll be starting on the truss bottom chord beams

    To cut the 5 in 12 pitch cuts I made a plywood jig for my 16" saw to run on . It has a little fence that the saw table runs against . When I made the jig I left the bed long and it got cut off the first time I made a test cut , leaving the bed the exact length that corresponds to where the blade will cut , same idea as a track saw , so I could just line up the jig with my mark , clamp and cut




    After I cut my first timber rafter to length , I tested it against my full scale layout so I wouldn't cut them all wrong if I had made an error



    I'm belt sanding the timbers with my 4x24 Makita sander with 36 grit , then 50 grit . Less of a sanding and more of a ripping the dirt , forklift marks and general sunburn off of them

    They're turning out pretty nice for the most part

    Finished the timber rafters today (stacked on sawhorses in background) and started on the 22' long timber truss lower chord beams , got 2 done today , hope to finish the other 4 tomorrow

    Why do you have several triple studs with a space in between and a header? Is that where the timber rafters will go? I have not ever seen framing like that.

    Those are the beam pockets where the timber trusses will go . The single top plate running through each pocket gets cut out , I just ran a continuous plate when I was framing the wall so it would all stay tied together until I got the plywood on .

    I like that. I kind of thought that's what it was but didn't think about having to cut out the section of the top plate. I've never worked with timber construction before. Thanks for the explanation.

    Got all my 22' long , 4x12 fir timber truss bottom chord beams cut and sanded



    Tomorrow I can cut the king posts to length and notch them as required to sit in the bottom chord and to house the rafters

    Might actually get to start putting some timbers up by Friday

    Laid out and cut the housings for the 4x12 timber rafters in the top of all the king posts




    The wider / shallower housing accepts the timber rafter . The deeper narrow centre notch accepts a Simpson strap that connects the 3 ply / 2x12 ridge beam to the king post of the "truss" . The timber rafter then overlays and hides the strap connection



    How the strap fits in there




    I got to use my Sorby 1" corner chisel and Sorby 2" framing chisel , I love those things

    Cut the notches on the bottom of the king posts that produce a shouldered 'tenon' that sits between and on the 2 bottom chord beams . I also predrilled the holes for the through bolts that will make the connection between the king post and beams . I used my little portable drilling jig to make sure the holes are plumb and square to the face





    Weather report called for showers this afternoon so I'm going to hold off starting assembly of the timbers till Monday as its supposed to be clear all next week
