Big brake kits

Heyo. Not trying to rehash the full debate on front brake options for our trucks. There are already many threads on that. I Think I want to go the big brake kit route and narrowed it down to StopTech and Wilwood. Somehow the wilwoods are cheaper and probably better quality. Anyone running either? Looking for first hand experience. I have 17” VTX rims and still need to do all of the “will she fit” calculations. I’m open to the Tundra brake swap route depending on effectiveness and cost.

The common options out there:

Tundra Kit
5th Gen 4runner Kit 338mm rotors - slightly bigger piston
Willwood kit from RR-Racing - Uses Aero6 6 Piston Calipers and you can run 5th gen 4runner Rotors (338mm)
Willwood BBK directly from willwood (Runs 342mm rotors) 6 Piston Calipers
Stoptech BBK from SOS Performance (Runs 342 mm rotors) 6 Piston Calipers

There are other but these are the more common options you will see. I went stock, 5th gen 4runner setup and now I am running the Willwood setup with 5th Gen 4runner sized rotors. Currently running Stoptech rotors but have a setup of DBA 4000 offroad rotors next. I went with this kit after the 4runner setup as I can pick up this rotor pretty much anywhere in a crunch if needed. The Aero6 setup I got are the Aero6-DS models that also have external dust shields for better offroad protection.

wilwood does make a kit specifically for 3rd gen Tacomas, why not just use that one?

 

I was already running the 5th gen T4R and the idea if I ever needed to swap a rotor while out (although lower likelyhood) I could run to any part store and get one. I did think about the direct kit from wilwood. I got a great price on the calipers from RR-Racing and a steal on the DBA (still need to put them on). More options in rotors etc. Its only a few mm smaller.

Also the other thing to consider if you have an OffRoad you won't be able to upgrade the master. If you have the non electronic master you can.

 

I did the Tundra swap on mine, and am totally impressed, the first time I had to do an emergency stop I thought the ass end of the truck was gonna flip over the front...

 

there is no need to upgrade the master cylinder unless you convert to rear discs.

 

Nice. What was the total cost? Did you just order the parts separately or find a lace they sells a kit

 

I have had my Wilwood BBKs on for the last 2and1/2 years and have been very pleased with the improved stopping ability. One nice side benefit is that they reduced the unsprung weight by just over 26 pounds. I found that out by weighing the original Wilwood box and then weighing it again with the OEM brake parts that I took off. In my pictures you can see me cutting off the dust shield but I found out from one of the 2nd gen owners who only bent the dust shield back that it was not necessary but it was not a big deal cutting them off. Both 2nd gen and 3rd gen use the exact same brake parts so they are compatible on both gens. Good luck with whatever way you choose to go.

 

Thanks for the info. I just found a old thread where they mentioned having to grind their TV spindle gussets way down, I’m not doing that

Many would disagree. what I noticed was better stopping but a softer petal. Not the end of the world but one thing to know.

Yes, at least when I bought mine all of the Wilwood BBKs came with the super lite calipers. All of the calipers, rotor hats, and brackets were forged aluminum. The unsprung weight savings of 26 pounds made a big difference.

 

Nice! 26 total or each side? Was a lot of that the rotor? I know thats a big part of the 2 piece. I am not running those and prob makes the world. Both are nice setups.

these are the Calipers I have. Are you running the BP 20 pads or another? I want to see what other options we have that are more geared for truck use then track use.

It was 26 total or 13 each side pretty well split between the calipers and rotors. My truck is not a race truck except in its dreams so I have the BP20 pads. I am planning on boost but have not decided on the OVT twins or the Magnuson, Harrop or URD supercharger. It was extremely difficult for me not to pull the trigger on the OV twins but I really want to have reviews on all of the options before my decision. I don't want to repeat my mistake with my y pipe where I finally ended up with Roost's equal length after going through 3 others. I am really happy with the Wilwoods as the price was less than the Stoptechs and the weight was also less. They have been around for a long time and Jay Leno has Wilwood brakes on most of his cars. That says it all for me.

 

Yah growing up all of the hot rods and such I was around had wilwoods. Stoptech (or centric) seemed to gain traction more in recent years. I’ve been happy so far. Losing weight would be nice. Th calipers are lighter but never weighed how much.

will come down to reviews and if you want supercharged or turbo setup. waiting to see how they all pan out.

just noticed the finned resi. Nice touch. Did not have that option when I set up. Not that I prob need it but why not.
