I need a new key

I won’t go into to much detail but they key to my truck mysteriously vanished as these things do, anyone know the best place to get one remade? I have a 1999 Tacoma btw.

 

Take your registration (or some official doc with your name and the truck vin) and a photo id to the parts dept at a Toyota or Lexus dealer and they can make a new one for ya

 

Thx do you know about how much that’ll cost me?

 

Each dealer can be different call yours and ask.

Then hope your vehicle has the original locks yet dealing with a 20 year old vehicle unless you owned it from new.

Get a few spares made so you don`t need to go through this again.

 

I have a 1986 300zx that I wanted new keys cut for. Fortunately I still had the key code so I brought some blanks to the Nissan dealer.

The original keys and cylinders were so worn out, they wouldn’t accept the newly cut fresh keys. So the mechanic had to grind my new keys until they were worn out enough to work.

 

I just read on a recent post that a guy got a new key from the dealership for around $8-9 and they also didn’t need the old key but used the VIN to cut the new key.

Jesus, at this point I would suggest taking all the key cylinders to a locksmith and have him rekey them to a new key.

 

I paid $18 dollars for a new key to be cut, but I also got the nice plastic key haha

I just had new keys cut at the dealership. I didn’t have the key code. I went in with the title for my truck and my ID. They were able to cut 2 keys with only vin info and were nice to write down my key code as well. It was like $21-25 but totally worth it

 

That’s nothin, I got quoted like $225

 

I paid $10 ea for keys to be cut. I just brought my registration and ID. It took 15min

 

I just went through this, new blank and dealer cutting via VIN# was $8.77.

Don’t have a spare key?

 

I only had a rough cut key that was pretty old. If you have a spare to cut from, then that is much cheaper and any place can do it. This guy seems to have lost his one and only.

 

Another option is to pull a door lock cylinder and take it in. They can cut a key by depth or code with a lock in hand.

But its always best to have the truck there for an ignition key, especially if it's older or has been used alot. There is a mobile locksmith that comes by my shop, you can try one of them if you cant make it to the dealer. But it's going to be more expensive

 

Factroy key from the dealer is leas then $20, spend the extra few bucks and get the factory key. They work a lot better then the two dollars onces that you can make at the hardware store.

 

I got a spare key cut at the local hardware store, they told me to test it before I paid for it because they "don't always work", sure enough the first one they cut didn't work. The second one did though, still does 4 years later. Cost maybe $5.


edit - didn't occur to me you may have lost your only key, if so then time to go to the dealership

 

Call a few dealerships in the area, that's way too expensive, especially for a non-chipped key. maybe they thought you had a newer Tacoma and didn't hear you correctly

my uncle recently locked himself out of his Chevy, we couldn't get the door propped enough so we went to the dealer close by and they cut a couple keys for under $30, but they can only open the door, not start it. I did have to download his registration from email so thankfully our state is online only
