Do you mean getting a top shift gear driven case? Cause my factory j-shift chain case is top shift

The atlas in fine in a DD, it uses np241 style planetary reduction and a gear drive output setup based on a Dana 300. It’ll be noisier than a single stock chain case but DD-able.

    Top shift gear drive case

The advantage of the atlas is that is THE last tcase you would have to buy. I have around 3k dumped into my lefty/dual setup and if I ever wanted to build a buggy I would have to buy an atlas or something, between the lefty and 30spline chromo everything i have probably the strongest gear drive toyota setup you could build. If I would have spent 1k more I would have a forever tcase. Now an atlas is a lot harder to fit into a Tacoma if you dont want it dangling way below the frame. The toyota duals used to be a good deal, but they switched the materials over to unobtanium or something because it's pretty expensive now. The days of building a dual setup out of junkyard parts for $500 are long gone! My duals are noisy as hell, and get crazy hot on the highway and it does increase your maintenance. I change my fluid every 6months when it was a DD, it seems to always leak etc. I DD my duals for over 12years. I have a friend with a 4spd atlas in his grand cherokee and he installed it once and never touched it again.

Saying that my duals are the best mod ever, way better than an SAS and worth the $$ and time invested. I should have went atlas but I also built my first set of duals in 2008 and my lefty in 2010 so it was still far cheaper than an atlas, now with today's prices and marlin getting stupid with restricting you from buying the parts to build it yourself, it's not worth the $$ for what you get these days IMO. TG I refuse to use anything that is a precision machined component, that's just me, their parts always looked like cheap HF crap to me, BUT others have had good luck with their stuff. In fairness I also had a marlin coupler strip out on me.

Another thing to consider is with an atlas you WILL need a welder to install it, you will have to build your own cross member. With the toyota duals you can just use the factory cross member. I did that for the entire time I was IFS with no real issues. So that's a consideration as well not knowing your tool availability and fabrication skill level.

    Just 3 tons of fun!!!
We're headed to Colorado Springs (specifically Ft Carson. my kid is stationed there)

On the way in, we're going to be coming through Aspen/Independence pass. We may be doing Pikes Peak while we're there depending on time. On the way home we'll be hitting Monarch pass on 50 and then we're going to do Highway 62 from Ridgway to Placerville and head out highway 145/90 to catch 191 in Utah south of Moab.

Already did and it’s fine! It’s in the third bay right now. Tundras being stored for the moment to make room for a 4runner I have to work on... while I have the runner I’ll hopefully get the front diff and shit onto the frame

Correct! I’m past the initial 500 miles and the oil change. After that, it instructs that only ‘light towing’ for 40 miles. I plan on calling tomorrow, just curious as to what other guys have done.

When I did my rear end last year, I just did the 500 mile break in and went about abusing it as I always have after that. Pulled the ring and pinion this year and 10,000 miles later to regear, and it doesn’t show any signs of abnormal wear or abuse.

    While we're talking crawlboxes-

Aside from cost, is there a reason not to put a Marlin or a TG in front of the stock chain tcase?

Replaced my lower ball joints on the 2004 I bought last year. Not knowing the full service history of this vehicle I wanted to do this as soon as possible. Of course that means 12 months later.

The boots must have been leaking grease for a long time. Tons of fresh grease and gunk on the lower control arms. Ugh.

First side took me 1.25 hours because I had to make two separate trips to the same parts store :anonymous:. Second side took me 15 mins.

    Questions:

    1. Has anyone ever seen this rubber cover (thingamagiggy) over the ball joint boots? It's not on my 1998 and in all my years on TW I've never seen it. Clearly it does nothing.

    IMG_1654.jpg IMG_1655.jpg

    2. I don't have a bench vise but I figured I'd check out the old LBJ versus the new. The old one had a megashitton of movement to it within the ball joint. Laterally, up and down and it spun so easily... without any force whatsoever. For shits and giggles... were the old LBJs shot?

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQtZJ13DErw

    3. After I lowered the truck I noticed that the camber looked off and maybe even toe. I drove it around and it seemed to have gotten better but it still looks off. I always thought that an alignment is unnecessary after changing the LBJs... they only go back on one way. Do I need to get an alignment or am I imagining things because I'm super dehydrated?

@Blackdawg @Squeaky Penguin (interested in your thoughts on #3, thanks fellas).

The dust boot came on later model 1st gens...2000 or 2001+ I'm not sure. But the early models didn't have them covering the LBJ boots. They can break off easily.
