I love that build. We are waiting for our Drifter and we also have a little one on the way and I’d love to build out an interior just like yours.

If it’s big enough to have to be moved I would think it’s enough. Especially with a note. As stated by others - I think they would have had a “reason” they took the site no matter what.

We just spent two weeks living out of our drifter with our 11 month old. It was great. We've also used it on many weekends with no issues.

Our daughter sleeps on a pack n play mattress on the floor with "crib walls" that i built out of plywood and carpeted. This is the third iteration of baby sleep setup that we've used in year one. I'm thinking I'll need to rebuild at least once more before I can trust her to not roll off of something like @alldownhill has.

Point is, there's plenty of room for a kid towards the front of the bed in the drifter. This leaves space to get in and out without disturbing them when you're done having beers by the campfire. Also, it is a nice dark space, which is ideal for a baby. Our daughter won't sleep unless it's pitch black so I even added window covers and a curtain that blocks her bed from the back of the truck.

I think it was more of a fishing for more reason as to why a cozy high top camper shell build was being displayed in the Wedge Life subforum. I doubt hate was the impetus for the post.

Brian from Off-Grid Backcountry Adventures uses a cheap empty tent because of the same situation you experienced. Not sure of his success rate, however.

Thanks to all who responded. It is true that assholes will be assholes and there's not much we can do, except let them know they are assholes and make them feel uncomfortable about what they did (we tried!). We have generally presumed we leave, we lose the site but its not always what we'd like to have happen - this was the second time we tried to reserve our spot so I guess we are batting 50%. The woods are especially packed these days since trips that would have been taken elsewhere are taken in the mountains due to the 'rona. Hopefully, that was our one asshole camp thief experience for the summer! Happy wedging...it's been a lifesaver for us this year.

Many now not not only ignoring camping etiquette... but forgetting basic civility. I am old and travel with my grandkid. My primary mission: she is having fun, having little or no negative experience, and most importantly she is safe.
Seems we can no longer speak calmly and reason with others... things escalate so quickly and easily nowadays. The crazies appear out in force. For all of us on this forum we want good wholesome fun with those we love and those we share a common interest.
    Stay safe out there.

Going to throw my two cents in. Sometimes aholes cause good folks to be aholes. My brother was looking for a camp spot on Mount Lemon Tucson during the week and there was a tent on one of the choice spots. For three days the tent remained and no one showed up day or night. Finally Friday midday, when my brother drove back by on the way out, the dude rolls in. He basically blocked anyone else from using it by holding it for 3 days before he planned on camping there.

I agree but to be fair he did mention that he left a note saying they would be back that night.

@huruta Sorry to hear that! Like everyone said some people just suck lol. Seems like a cheap throw out tent might be worthwhile to try but who knows if it would really make the difference. Cut throat camping I guess!

@bigtrout we have 2month old and have camped with her a couple times. As most have said your set up needs will be different once they are sleeping on their own so it makes sense to make due with what you have/keep it minimal for now. Our build out is good for the three of us but down the road we will change it up. As afar as the drifters ability to support camping with kids, it works great. Easy to set up and be sleeping or in shelter quickly!

Anyone thinking of trading their long bed Drifter for a short bed one? I'm starting to think about going from a DCSB to an ACLB since I have only carried passengers in the rear of my truck like 5 times in the past 6 years. It would be nice to have a "lower bunk" for stealth camping.

The chances of the switch to a smaller bed are probably pretty slim.
After having the shortbed originally and now having a longbed I couldn’t imagine going back. Having the extra room for activities is awesome!

Good luck on your hunt though. If you are able to make it happen you will be so damn stoked. I know I am.

    Trail limo FTW!!

Technically it wouldn’t be a trail limo if it’s the access cab, which is why I’m considering it. I don’t want a bigger truck enough to do DCLB. If I did, I would have snagged that taco before you did.

I do think I'll make it more clear in the future that we were that we stayed at the said location the night before and that we did not leave a tent because it is on the truck and that the table and stuff is essentially our version of a tent. I agree 'holding' a campsite when you aren't using it is an asshole thing to do. It just gets trickier when you stayed there the night before. I'm thinking I'll create a form that says, "Hey! We stayed her last night (date:_______) and we plan to stay here tonight (date:______). We did not leave a tent because our 'tent' is a camper on the back of our truck which we needed to go hike/fish/enjoy the great outdoors. Please consider our table and items as our 'tent', marking this is our spot of refuge. We hope you will respect this. Thanks."

Okay, it's now done. a bigger font, a zip lock and some duct tape and it's the best we are going to do without buying and setting up a sham tent. For some reason carrying extra crap to thwart assholes rubs me the wrong way. Will report back on how that works out for us!

    What about mosquitoes?

In Northern Ontario, summer camping season really begins somewhere about now usually - once the bug populations have died down. That's when my wife is along for the ride. We paddle across some of the most challenging areas, but ultimately bugs deter her for a good part of the summer. I'm usually fine all by my lonesome but again usually because I spend any sedentary time with a screen around me...

I see everyone's camp often involves the wedge deployed with the bed wide open...don't the bugs find their way inside, and up especially??

At the moment I try and keep the back closed if the bugs are bad. So far it's just been a few that I kill before going to bed but I do have a Strawfoot netting that I need to install. It needs to be modified to fit around an interior light and I want to use something other than self-tapping screws to keep sharp edges away from the wiring...so I haven't installed it yet. I'll probably have moms help me re-sew the light cut-out this fall/winter.
