So I replacing the rear door panel and when reinstalling the upper plastic trim that goes along side the window. I realized I should have put the clips on the trim prior to installing. Now they fell to what I can guess is behind the thin plastic film behind door panel. Anyone have any luck retrieving these or are they lost in door black hole?

If you pull off the upholstry panel, you can get back there. I was doing sound deadining over the weekend and got one back that way.

Upholstery panel? Is that the plastic film liner behind the plastic door panel?

Pretty sure if you rip the door panel off and the plastic, you can stick your arm down inside the door and grab them. You may have to remove the speaker to get your arm in there but I think I had to do that once or twice..

Hmmm...I wonder if I get away with removing the speaker to get access. I was hesitant on removing the plastic film since it’s glued on and I wasn’t sure if can re attach if this pulled off.

Yeah, if you take the speaker out you should be able to get your hand in there. I forgot the plastic film has a cutout for the speaker.

Hopefully I can reach them ha ha. Luckily they don’t seem to rattle when I took the Tacoma for a drive :).

You'll have to hope they fell down to the bottom of the door and aren't wedged up top somewhere still

Yeah I hope so to. From what I remember it sounded like they fell at the very bottom of the door panel when they dropped. I tried shaking the door a little bit to determine if they are still at the top but I couldn’t hear anything. Such a stupid mistake on my end.

Those clips are tricky. I've dropped them so many times trying to put them back in lol.

I believe so. It's been a while but I do remember dropping a bunch of them and being able to recover them.

I have no experience with this on my Tacoma, but in most vehicles that plastic film is held on by a tacky black "caulking" type of stuff. You can carefully peel the plastic where you need to, then stick it back in place when you're done.

yeah that is what the seems like this caulky adhesive past. I wasn’t sure how easy it is to reseat when I peel it back. I am just hoping going through the speaker opening will suffice.

Just peel as much as you need for access, not the whole thing. It will easily stick back... just don't let the black stuff get stuck to dirt or it's all over.
