Tuff Stuff Alpha Roof Top Tent

I've been researching for an affordable hard shell roof top tent and the Tuff Stuff Alpha looks great. I could not find any reviews here on Tacomaworld. So if anyone has recently purchased this tent or has any knowledge/insight about it, I would appreciate it. Thanks.

 

my buddy just bought one not long ago and used it a couple times. first outing was 2 nights in the Upper Peninsula of MI in January. They seem to be built well and hold up to the cold.

 

That’s great! I’m glad to hear it held up well. We recently purchased the Tuff Stuff Alpha RTT for preorder and we’re super excited. They will start shipping out at end of July just in time for fall camping and adventure. Thanks for the info.

 

Is this related to Crusader Overland? I saw that they were doing a hard shell RTT called the Alpha, but then they kinda disappeared.

 

I’m not sure about crusader overland, but the alpha tent I purchased is by Tuff Stuff Overland. Just recently received it and used it a couple of times with no issues. I did a lot of research and this was the biggest and most affordable hard shell roof top tent out there. Here’s a couple of pics.

 

Its tuff stuff. I was looking into getting their Alpha mini. Looks pretty affordable and solid.

 

Yep, I'm gonna keep my eye on that one. I think a RTT will be my next big purchase.

 

Just took our first desert trip in the Alpha II (mini). Still dimensionally close to a queen size mattress inside. I’m 6’1” and my GF is 5’7” and we had plenty of room. In 20-30mph winds the rain fly was a little noisy but we could still sleep. It’s removable and can be tensioned so I’m sure it’s a learning point.

My biggest recommendation is to cut the bolts to the length YOU need before fully mounting it. Especially if you have a prinsu style rack with limited access from the sides. It will speed up your instal in a big way.

How much does the full size alpha stick off the back of the short bed? I have literally inches to space in the garage... Also how has it worked out for you? Very interested in both the Desert Armor and the Tuff Stuff Alpha. Was thinking the Alpha II but if the regular fits I would love to go that route! I have the same KB rack in aluminum. I love it!

 

You just need a taller garage.

 

Haha. The current idea is using some webbing and strut compressors to compress the rear suspension. Either that or fab a rolling lift.

 

It sticks out about 10 inches, give or take. I have the long bed KB rack on a short bed taco which I think looks better, especially with tent sticking out the back a little. Been using it a bunch this fall with no issues. Love how we can leave 3 pillows and bed sheets in the tent and still be able to close it. Here’s another picture.

 

I have that same set up but don’t think it will fit in garage...

 

Is anyone using the Anti condensation mat in their Alpha that is for the soft tents. I ordered one to use on my Alpha II but now I see they are selling the ones meant for the Alphas.

 

Has anyone tried the Alpha 2?
I think its a bit wider inside than the ikamper mini which might be nice. anyone have any experience with it?

 

I just got mine on Friday and set it up in my living room. Its about the size of a queen size mattress just a little skinner on the lower half.
