Any compatibility issues with mixing MC XD 4.7 gears & the TG dual adapters kit? I remember reading that someone had to cut down the input shaft on the MC shaft cause the splines were too long, but that was on an inchworm
The MC gears have some features that make it more appealing than the TG internals, like the better oiling design & bigger shanks. Or are the MC splines cut totally different than TG? Should I not even bother?

You can run TG front and rear adapters with MC gears. But you must buy and run MC 23/23 female coupler instead of the provided tg coupler. The splines are cut different between TG and MC.

Gotcha. I've got a manual 4cyl which is 26 spline from what I understand so i'll have to go with TG since they are the only ones that make 23/26 couplers from what I've read.

Yep, you're probably better off running TG gears. Don't want to mix match gears and have issue.

Yep, unless you wanted to track down a 23 spline v6 case to swap in too

Yea I agree. That's what I'll have to do.

Just trying to track down a gear case to steal the low range section from and build up.
Made the mistake of putting in my information to one of those parts search websites and now i'm getting a million calls and text from people all of the united states trying to sell me T-cases.... Pretty sure most of them are scams anyways cause they won't send me any pictures.

Nowadays, rf1a are harder and harder to source. When you do find one, the seller usually want an arm and a leg. I recall maybe a decade ago, I could get them for 50-75 buck complete, now they go for 2-300 buck.

Car-part is typically the best way to go on this too. Funny enough it looks like there is nothing super cheap in CA around @betterbuckleup. I know I scored mine for $50 in central Indiana back in 2014 and they are still out there for less than $100, just might have to ask about shipping or making some phone calls to places without prices listed.

Yea under $100 would be sweet, but those days seem to be numbered. At least near me.

Yea not much immediately local to me. I've been calling around to some of the places further away more down south. Found one $135 shipped about 4 hours away. Totally willing to pay anything under $200. Just gotta get some pics before I pull the trigger to make sure it's all there and the right case.

Apparently they also had chain cases in that year range? I thought all the T-cases in that era were gear driven. One the places sent me a pic of the one they have in stock and it appears to be a chain case based on the MC t-case bible and there being only 5 bolts that hold the rear cover on.

That's a Tacoma driver drop chain case. The best way I've found to search for them is a 1985 4Runner, MT. The only tcase to come in 85 MT 4Runners was a top shift.

@betterbuckleup I scored one off eBay a few weeks back for I think 180 shipped. I was told by TG that it had to be (for them to build it into a crawl box and to receive their $400 dollar core discount)
“A gear driven transfer case out of a manual 84-86 4Runner or pickup, full unit with complete gearing/internals, housing”.

At the time I searched there were probably 10 or so units available on eBay, but as mentioned the prices were pretty high. Most were in the 400 dollar range, a few sub 100 but they were either incomplete or in really bad shape.

If you have any doubts give them a call and ask to speak with Lincoln, he can help you verify that it will or won’t work. I’ve been SUPER impressed with Trail Gears customer service, very patient and they seem to actually enjoy helping you out and solving issues or troubleshooting things.

TG now require core for their Tacoma trail creeper crawl box?? Their site specifically states "no core charge"

So im assuming you paid $1873.25 instead of the full $2273.25?? You could have built it yourself for cheaper and saved yourself another $500 buck or so, lol. TG 4.7 with TG Tacoma adapters would have run you about $1400 + your $180 rf1a. Or heck, run better mc 4.7s with TG adapter for not much more.

They don’t charge a core, but they’re short on cores to build with, so they ran a 400 dollar credit if you could provide them one. I bought during their 4th of July sale (17.76% off) and used their new subscriber discount (10%). So I got the setup for about 1450, but I grabbed a couple other items at the same time. Was a good enough deal for me.

If I do another down the road on another project I may go the route you describe, definitely another good option

Any tips on how to get the coupler off without welding stock to pull off? Haven’t set up my welder yet lol
