Awesome man, I really think you've proven very well what works on your truck.... And you have half a million miles to prove it, actually the dealer tests and the gauges, etc.

I tried two Ebay "Denso" MAFs, and one from Amazon. The two Ebay units, at <$20, I suspect are Chinese fakes. Not sure about the $50 Amazon one. I never actually bought a $150+ MAF from Toyota, that would have been interesting. But all three "Denso" MAFs (I put the word in quotes because I don't trust any of them to be real Denso) gave me similar results, with high LTFT.

Figured I try this out, got the whole volvo tube and maf from the junk yard. It fits better than the stock maf. Repinned my plug for 99 and newer. Truck appears to run great with no issues. Seems like its got more pep. My truck has a 98 motor with supercharger and urd 7th injector. My afr's seem to be unchanged but I'm no expert. Running the base map from urd. Ive only driven it around the block a few times though so far.

I was thinking about my EGR situation. My truck was made in California so that’s why it has the EGR
so it will pass the emissions there in 1997, but colorado Tacoma trucks didn’t need to have an EGR in 1997.

So I’m wondering if it can be removed and will pass colorado emissions or does the truck have to stay with the original emissions with what it was made with from factory?

This is awesome! I would have never thought to do this mod, but it is totally worth it!

I noticed crisp throttle right away just pulling out of the driveway, and more part throttle grunt. The best part, mpg's are higher too.

If you have a bullet style maf, I suggest you do this.

Edit: I also picked up 1 psi of boost!

I ended up swapping back to my old MAF today. I noticed that if I sat idle for a while, my fuel trims would end up going very positive, enough to throw the CEL. Not sure why this just started to happen. The fuel trims did go up a few bumps with the new maf, but never threw a CEL. Anyways I switched back over to see if it was the maf or a true vacuum leak somewhere. With the old maf, fuel trims went back to normal and CEL is gone, but still seem a tad higher than before the new maf. Maybe I do have a new vacuum leak somewhere. Need to search some more. Also can’t say much about fuel trims just yet as the ECU needs to relearn everything. Only drove about 15 miles to far.

If it just started and you have had it on there for awhile you probably have another problem somewhere else.

A dirty MAF or bad MAF will do this too and of course a vacuum leak and dirty injectors.

Did you try cleaning the MAF before swapping back?

Mine is still running just fine

AN UPDATE ON THIS MOD 40,000 MILES LATER

Every thing was going very well till a month ago.

I was having high fuel trim issues at +10 to +15 +19

I actually replaced my fuel pump thinking this was my problem.
It was over due anyways. Didn’t fix the problem.

I bought 2 new MAF off eBay (they ended up being fake Toyota) and then a DENSO from Napa.

My fuel trims with the 2 off eBay MAF were not good at +10
The Napa DENSO fuel trims were at +5

So I just went and bought an OEM MAF from the dealer and now my fuel trims are at ZERO 90 percent
    of the time,

The DENSO and OEM MAF didn’t look the same either.

If you do this MOD and use an aftermarket MAF sensor the fuel trims may have issues with an aftermarket MAF

With the OEM MAF my numbers are excellent.

I got an ebay one and Ltft is basically locked at 14.84. I have it setup as blow thru maf now, so we shall see what happens with that.

Says the different numbers for 1997, they are for a reg cab and an Extra cab.
Not sure why they would be different tho,
    Both are 4x4, 3,4, Manual

Just wondering if anyone can help with this? I have a 1997 Toyota Prado with the 3.4 V6 and I'm trying to do the maf upgrade. However the wire colours into the rear of the plug are as follows (left to right)
White/red stripe, Brown, Yellow/green stripe, Yellow, Black. Has anyone seen this config or know how to tell what wires do what?

    Cheers

Is your original large MAF the same part number as the Tacoma?
If so just tag each wire as it was a Tacoma MAF and switch that way

So I just did the mode, and it seems to be running ok "97 4Runner. . i need to weld a roof rack but ill try it out on the freeway later tonight. i bought the volvo maf, it was like 30 bucks used, and 20 for the fake china denso part. Well it says toyota genuine but idk. Also im running a Supercharged 3.4L, AEM methanol injection, 2.2 pulley, and URD 7th injector. I never really looked at the MAF until reading this post, and mannnn that bullet style does restrict air flow.

Also thanks for posting the 97 4Runner pin config.

If you haven't had your injections cleaned and serviced, I highly suggest it, I just did mine and what a difference it made. FYI

Where did u get yours serviced? Its been a thing on my list for awhile now. I get about 10psi boost but still get a little rumble in low gear to high rpm.

So the mod i did seems alright, like people said a little more pep and the MPG seems to be better.
