So I have a 2017 TRD Sport short bed. It has 30k miles and hasn’t really giving me many problems.
I bought it with the plans of making it my last vehicle.
Still owe around 17k o it.
The truck is currently having a timing chain cover leak repaired under warranty. For the 2nd time. The dealer admitted it wasn’t fixed correctly the first time and is very apologetic about it. And promises to have everything checked and repaired correctly.
I’m not sure how I feel about the fact that the engine is been taken out and put back. To me it seems like it won’t have that factory reliability that you get when you get a brand new vehicle. Thinking most of it was put together by machines and now is going to be done manually. Or maybe I’m wrong.
Yes this it the second time. But I had learned to leave with it. I also think the first time they didn’t take the engine out but pushed it to the side to work on it. That’s was probably why it happened again.
Anyways. Just wanting your opinion about it. Since a lot of you have a lot more experience with the mechanics of it in general.
Do I keep it or trade it in for a 2020?
And no I don’t want or need 4 wheel drive or a long bed.
    Edit.
I forgot to mention. I did get an extended warranty. I don’t usually get them. But with this having a new engine and my credit union selling me one for 100k miles for half of what dealers usually charge for them. I figured it would be a good idea. I guess it was. The dealer is fixing it under the original warranty.

    Thank you.

I don’t keep vehicles I’ve lost confidence in as reliable transportation. And i certainly wouldn’t buy another off the same thing with the same damn motor expecting a new experience.

I agree, debt freedom is worth more than having a new vehicle. I’d sell the truck and take what you get back to buy an older truck you can afford. That’s just me......but I waited until I was 46 years old to buy a brand new Taco. That’s when I found I could lay down the cash for that new-car-smell. Up until that point I’ve always driven used vehicles.

Time to trade. The timing chain cover leak may reoccur, and out of warranty will be a $4K+ repair.

I had a 2017 Porsche Macan S. It had a warranty issue that required the engine to be removed at 4K miles. I drove an additional 30k miles after that with no issues. My 1989 Porsche 911 has had the engine out for a big clutch job. Probably not the first time either. Runs like a top with 131k miles on it. I wouldn’t worry about it at all. And to the guys that say if you can’t pay cash you can’t afford it? Dumbest thing I’ve heard. Who’s paid cash for their house? Not me. Why tie up all that cash if you don’t have to. You can pay back any loan quicker if you want. Just takes discipline and it builds your credit.

I would say a home is generally an appreciating asset, that can also be revenued (suites, home office etc).

If you wanna rent my backseat, or work out of my truck, let me know.

True you’re right. I’m good on the backseat. Thanks for the offer. I’ve got two kids, I’ve thought about sleeping in my truck many times.

I would try to get the dealer to give you the extended warranty from the repair mistake. If I couldn’t I would trade it in. As I will have lost all faith in that particular truck.

Any car is going to have issues. And unfortunately Toyota doesn’t have a good track record of fixing known issues on new model years.
Odds are the 2020 with the 3.5l will run into the same problem.
That said, any other vehicle you replace it with will have it’s own problems as well. But if you get a low-priced used one, it almost doesn’t matter in a cost comparison.

My tacoma’s in the shop as we speak, with all this corona nonsense i’m likely going to sell it and get into something just as broken — but a lot cheaper

When you sign your paycheck every week you are effectively endorsing private credit by allowing banks to fractionally lend on your deposit. In other words your the reason why he’s able to get a loan to buy a vehicle in the first place.

    It's a secret
I would trade it in if I were in your shoes OP. I would prefer the peace of mind driving in a factory fresh mechanically new vehicle with a new warranty myself.

Loads of cash or just liveable amount of cash, it doesn't matter if how you are able to live a life which makes you happy. Some people will have more of it than others and that isn't necessarily a bad thing. You do you OP. You reap what you sow, be it good vibes or bad, money, healthy lifestyle or not...life goes on until it doesn't.

I've got a weeping TC cover (4.0). I just repurposed it mentally as my "Anti-Rust Deployment System." Never had a problem in 100K miles. I just monitor my oil levels regularly (as one should) and I've never seen an out of ordinary level drop between changes.

If you still want a Tacoma then trade it in, but get one with the 2.7. It’s been around since 95. Should be reliable enough for you.

let the cover weep oil, wont affect anything. Just check your oil every 5k mi and change 10k. Or trade it in... i think only the 17 had the issue.

As far as machines go and let’s specify Toyota vehicles, they’re pretty easy to fix and maintain. It sounds like you’ve got a doozy of an issue if you were already out of warranty however since you’re under and not paying it seems like it could be one less thing you’d be dealing with, with a new version of the same vehicle.

I’m not well read on the timing chain cover issue, but I’m comfortable with removing and replacing anything that’s not inside of a transmission or diff. I would pay the $80-$120 inspection fee that the absolute best independent mechanic charges in your area to inspect any parts that would have had to been replaced in the engine removal / whatever’s possible to inspect. With the likelihood of that dealer mechanic doing the fix correctly this time, based on what I’ve seen there’s the possibility that he skipped a step or messed up something else in the repair and replace on the engine is still present. If it all checks out and the leak is gone I’d keep the vehicle at least until the warranty is getting near and reassess.

As far as financing goes, from the little I’ve learned in the financial habits of wealthy people, if they can possibly finance something at a lower rate than they can invest their money not being tied up in the purchase then that’s how they operate, but obviously the average Joe isn’t getting a higher return on their money in most cases.
