Steering Wheel Conversion With Audio & Optional Bluetooth Phone Controls (official write up).

Just got my Dark Grey 4Runner steering wheel with audio controls, going to try and do the retrofit into my 2003 Tacoma. PLEASE, any pointers suggestions would be helpful as i take on this MOD, I am waiting on the airbag and I also want to change the turn signal stalk to one that has the fog light switch on it as well.

 

ANyone can chime in on this question? PLEASE

 

Is there an airbag fuse when disconnecting the airbag ? So as not to have to deal with driving 100 miles
for the ECU to relearn itself

 

I would just disconnect the NEGATIVE OR BOTH BATTERY CABLES

 

The cancel cam is part of the whole thing that holds all the switches. Find one used off a sequoia, 4gen 4runner 2005 tacoma.

Thats the one. I have a turn signal lever with the fog light switch I'll sell. I need to pull it out and check for sure.
Wire pigtails are the next hard thing to find.

 

This is what controls I am going to go with for my setup, not sure what I am going to program the two extra buttons for, but I will figure it out on the day of the install.

 

Have you found an airbag yet for your steering wheel? I like that wheel quite a bit, the black leather looks nice. When I found a replacement I was really limited by the airbag connectors. At some point in the early 2000s Toyota switched over to a 2 connector airbag design for most of their models, while our Tacos have the single connector. Curious to see what you end up using.

You can swap the air bag charge from your original air bag to the new air bag. You will have to change the plug over also.

 

Is there a guide anywhere to go that? I've read both of your steering wheel radio control threads, and in the other one you made it sound kinda risky.

 

This is my steering wheel on top of my undercover bed cover, it looks black, but it’s actually a dark grey. My buttons are black, the retrofit is going to be done after my “Frame Swap” I have other projects that are more critical to get the car driving safely.

 

I've removed a few charges. Main thing is lay both airbags on the concrete. Use a static ground strap for each wrist. Connect one to each airbag horn tab. Unbolt each airbag charge. Lift them both out at the same time and swap them. Then bolt them back together.

And don't lean over the top of them.

 

Looking at gusto'' Set-up. His steering wheel controls on the RT hand side. Interesting on the Middle buttons, looks like running lights or fog.? How would this plum into your wire harness, exiting the clock spring, If you have a 1st gen 95 1/2 Tacoma SR5 4x4. one of the first Tacos - off the line in Santa Clara, Ca. I have no main wires harness. I have completed this Mod, Jon has help me out a lot here, It works great... some of these photos in this Mod, is my Taco, Know this extra button has caught my attention to maybe double mod this mod....Can't go into the Stereo. I know its a Chinese knock-Off. I think the first request to see if anybody has completed the connection with any light set-up, on a early 1st gen. 2nd a wire diagram on it.? 3rd buy it, track down the controls wires, for the lights on the ribbon, and add wires exiting the clock spring and connect them to Lights. ???

 

what are those from? i've never seen those controls.

 

The extra buttons are just resistor values, as far as the extra 2 middle buttons they are proximity sensor On/off buttons. These do illuminate, the harness from the sequoia has extra wires or slots where you can “ADD” the illumination wire. I believe mechanicjon has this figured out as he has access to wiring diagrams. As far as 1st Gen, it does not matter because you are doing a retrofit into the wiring harness. Take a look at the clock spring vehicle side connector.
