I think it picked up a lot of debris - lots of explosive material to fuel it. WaPo says it was in an area known to store fireworks, and then if we add the possible contents of other nearby warehouses (because it would not surprise me if hazardous chemicals were stored next door because them fucks don't care about zoning) we have the makings of a real disaster.

A few years back was a train derailment that had both oil cars and and powdered grains. One of the cars caught fire, the grains aerosolized, and a small kaboom became an organic fuel-air explosive.

At least, I hope that isn't radioactive...

Depending on how many, that's tons and tons of black powder, packed tightly.

Take a bunch of "innocuous" fireworks, tightly pack them into a confined block, and you've made a small bomb.

Fill up a warehouse with them next to a fuel depot or chemical storage facility and it's only a matter of time before you make the news.

A dirty bomb is nothing more than a regular explosive with radioactive material added to create a contaminated area. The explosive power is not nuclear fission.

Correct on what a dirty bomb is, however... atomic energy IS what gives a nuclear weapon its power when compared to a conventional bomb. Same in that a fuel air bomb is quite a bit more powerful then a standard explosion. You could also say the same for tamping a bomb vs not tamping a bomb. All explosives have different properties that have better uses. C4 is better for cutting steel, and ammonium nitrate is good for earth movement. Even the way the way you place charges has an effect. Standoff vs up against something, several separated to maximize reflective pressure, or an air detonation. Not that I’ve ever uses explosives before.

Nuclear weapon is an explosive device that derives its destructive force from nuclear rather than chemical reactions. A nuclear reaction releases about a million times more energy than does a chemical reaction.
