I have a 2019 Sport with a backup camera that is pretty useless. My question is are there different quality screens for each model or does mine just really suck.

Clean the camera lens? Check and clean the connections? It’s not a 4K video but my BU camera is totally usable.

It’s not great but it’s good enough that I can back up leaving two inches between my garage door and the shackle in the receiver and I have never hit the door so good enough for me...

    1. The cameras are the same quality across the various truck models.
    2. No, the camera isn't "useless", nor does it "totally suck". The issue isn't even the cameras, or at least not entirely.
    3. The head units Toyota have chosen use a relatively low resolution/pixel count. I can see this when I look at Apple Carplay in my 2020 Tacoma and see that the Carplay interface is slightly blurry compared to a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee (similar sized screens) which has a very sharp look. Toyota simply should have used a higher quality head unit screen. I'm guessing that alone would have resolved this "low quality camera" issue and that the cameras themselves are probably just fine.
    4. I find that the current camera set up, including 360-pano camera, is perfectly functional/usable. I think it's overreaction to say the cameras are "useless". I use mine every day and they get the job done. But, of course, I agree that Toyota deserve criticism for not using a better head unit screen. They cheaped out when engineering that part of the new models.

Its the same with my truck anytime it rains, or very foggy with high humidity. I've cleaned the lens with a no fog cloth which helps tremendously.

Mine is pretty much the same as my wife's 2015 Lexus, and a huge upgrade from my previous GMC Canyon backup camera.

Now that's the answer I was looking for. BTW they cheaped out on a few other things too.

The cameras and head unit in them are of an objectively poor quality. It’s not a matter of complaining just to complain when a 2018 base model accord’s cameras and head unit are leaps better than a 2020 Pro. That’s straight up dickish by Toyota. I’m sure the next gen will tout high def displays and cameras, as a means to attract people to upgrade.

I always thought mine was alright. Not as good as the wife's CRV, but pretty close. Last week I sat in my father-in-laws newer X5. Big difference from his to mine. But I am sure his X5 cost a lot more than my SR5 did..

This one sucks. I'm comparing it to a 2017 RAV4 Limited I once owned that was clear as a LED TV. My 2019 CRV is ten times better. At 70 my neck don't turn quite as far I'd like it to hence the bitchin.

Buddy got a 2019 loaner because someone wrecked his car. That backup cam is straight potato vision. The taco is pretty good imo

No, it's not great. But I find it usable. In the settings, turning up the brightness helped quite a bit. YMMV..

    I’m new here...
and also feel the screen reso is a bit underwhelming.
is there an aftermarket work around anyone know of? backing up is meh but ‘functional’, i cant imagine how the screen could possibly help you off-road though.
