Haha yeah I figured but one of the biggest reasons for me getting a cap was so I could sleep in the back. This is why OP needs to drop the idea hes going to build a rig that meets his needs without actually going out and camping.

This is also why I have no interest in a RTT. No way I want to be claiming in/out of that thing.

It's funny how much people get their panties in a twist over this. Who cares what you call it, who cares what you drive, who cares how it's modded. If you are getting out and respecting nature and our public lands, that's awesome and nobody can take it away from you. Mocking people for going to national parks, or slabbing a long road trip because it's not what you do, or see as cool... come on, how old are we? I've got a ton of shit that I haul into the woods for my vacation once a year. 1-2wks in some beautiful country, traveling mostly alone with my wife and two small kids. On this last trip to the Black Hills, Bad Lands, and Buffalo Gap grasslands, if I didn't have high clearance bumpers, sliders, 4wd, and the locker who knows how I would have got out of some potentially sticky situations.

My advice, being the poser I guess I am, to the OP: Grab some camping gear, some water, some food, some cooking gear, some legal use maps, and your camera... toss it all in your stock truck and head into the woods. Enjoy, respect, and protect nature and your public/private lands. You will quickly figure out what kit you need/want, and what is useless to you... to include your gear, truck, etc.

Nothing to it, here’s what you need:

    1. Bright orange paint job makes it easier to find the truck when you walk off for a nature doody.

    2. 4X4 decals, preferably multiple. Let’s nature know you’re not taking any shit from her.

    3. Ditch lights installed halfway down your hood. Ditches are the scourge of overlanders and can be found where you least expect them. The ditch lights will keep you safe from them.

    4. Chrome rollbar with KC lights. Don’t waste your time with some expensive light bar. This classic combo got Marty McFly and Jennifer to the lake, it’ll get you where you need to go.

Here’s my lil’ rig out in Moab, wheeling near some ancient petroglyphs:

No wonder they were weren’t lighting up. I tried smacking them with my Skottle, #SkottleSmack, but had no luck. Had many close calls with wild ditches that trip, guess I’ll have to get a proper set.

First do you have any outdoor experience?
Start by taking it out stock to places reachable by dirt/gravel roads. Learn its and more importantly your capabilities. As the second grows you'll learn what mods you "need". Pretty doesn't get you down the trail. Take your time. And don't be surprised if something you do doesn't work out the way you want. It's just parts and they come off as easy (well almost) as they went on.

Altering a vehicle is a road not a destination.

A Skottle is probably your best chance to avoid starvation during #overlanding. It’s origins are unknown but many believe indigenous people used it to thaw fish sticks. The Skottle was specifically designed to efficiently burn off the GMOs. Today it’s considered as essential to the overlander as Maxtrax recovery boards.

Ha, I just looked it up. I have one. :anonymous:

Kind of, anyway, two horseshoes welded onto a plow disc.

Freaking fantastic for large batches of fajitas.

All this time I though I was camping! I'm just about packed for my OVERLANDING trip!!! Lol.

Anyway I'm packing up now. I could easily cut this in half if I wanted to.

Yeah... so my maxtrax are essential for getting the truck perfectly level at camp. Used to use some rounds cut from downed timber.. but these fancier.

The skottle looks like a flat wok, meh.

How many months at a time do you plan to be on the road?

Reading through all this it seems we have been doing this all wrong. We just like to go camping and be comfortable. I can't do a tent anymore so we do a tiny camper but stay outside all the time.

Depending on tiny camper you could still be overlanding.

It's tiny. No indoor bathroom or kitchen. Perfect for us. Follows the truck right up the fire roads and completely self sufficient.
