I use a Yakima RTT on my horse trailer. I also mount it on my teardrop trailer and camper topper, depends on where I'm going and how many people are in the group. The RTT has been by far the quickest set up.

On the Runner -1 or -2 if there was a head wind. On the Taco, partially tucked behind the cab, almost nothing.

    Like, so many.
If I ever go RTT, I'm going hard shell. I know they are much more expensive, but they are just so much faster. I was watching a comparison vodeo the other day and I can set up my ground tent nearly as quick as a traditional RTT and I can definitely break it down as fast.

My solution might not be the best for most people, but I ended up with a Kodiak canvas tent. The vinyl basin in it is like 8 or 9" deep and the canvas is treated, so far no rain has even gotten inside it. :fingerscrossed:

The tent does weigh like 50lbs though.

I have had 4 different RTT setups, still haven't found one that has me sold on the idea. Actually thinking about a OZTent for the next setup. Hard shells are nice, but unless its a clamshell they are a PITA to close alone... or at least the roofnest was. Might just build a mini camper out of a cargo trailer and be done with it.

What type of critters are the issue?

Squirrels climb, rats climb, bears, cougars, racoons, possum, bobcat, hell even snakes can climb.

I've camped before and had no issues at night only to wake up and find what looked like bobcat tracks on my hood and roof of the truck. Foot pad was >2-3" so Im certain it wasnt a house cat, just a bit too small for a cougar. Not even going to bother with where I've found rodent droppings while camping, nothing seems safe from them.

I guess your right there. I had a frog on my hood last week when I went out to go to work.
I just remember a snake getting under my tent one afternoon and having raccoons going along the side of it one night.
Also had a drunk cousin think it was funny to take a leak on my tent while we were in it sleeping.
I am sure he would have done something else if we were up on top of the bed.

If one fears the night critters one might consider staying home.

Very few “attacks” happen at night. Most are daylight occurrences caused by doing something stupid. Night time stuff is just foraging. Keep a clean camp will solve almost all of those issues.
Although I really hate it when some critter urinates on stuff. But when you gotta go you gotta go.

If you're one of those people that goes on 1-2 camping trips per year, it isn't worth it. My wife and I get out 3/4 weekends a month and we're never going to just camp. We're either mountain biking, climbing, or trail running so it's super nice to be able to roll up to a spot and have our tent deployed in seconds (Roofnest Falcon XL). We still do plenty of bivying when the situation calls for it, but by and large the RTT has made our lives much easier and more comfortable.

It's also 6" thick when folded, so MPG difference is about 1-2mpg.

Its all for the ig post, half the folks who buy them never ever have slept in them, tbh a camper shell is more usefull, I can sleep in the city and the woods, I never have understood whypeople think its safe sleeping in a paper house full of bears, atleast in a shell I can hear it

I can close my Roofnest Falcon XL by myself in about 15 seconds.

I can close mine with the push of a button. Then its 10 straps, and barely any tucking. No zippers
