i dont think the 996 will ever appreciate. it will always be second to the 997, and there will always be enough 997s around to keep the 996 at relatively low prices. 993 skyrocketed because they were the last air cooled. what does the 996 have that the 997 doesn't? there is no reason for the 996 to ever see the values that other generations have seen.

Good car! I owned a 997, next model after yours. Don’t worry about IMS comments, the Turbo engine has engine based on original Mezger engine. No IMS bearing in it. Don’t worry about mileage either. Those engines are “bullet proof”. 996 turbos values are going up every day. Only downfall is the goofy fried egg headlights that are not reminiscent of a 911, and the 996 doesn’t have a set of hips to save its life even though the turbos are considered a wide body compared to the carrera. I’d still take it.

Ps, I have a new clutch kit if it’s a six speed manual. Over $1,000 in parts, trying to dump for $500.

Love the Cayman. Always wanted an Air cooled 911 until I went to buy one and forgot that none of them came with Tilt wheel. I couldn't get my knees under the steering wheel. After driving some Boxsters and a Cayman I've lost all desire to buy any 911.

Wife had a 16 Cayman and now has a 18 718S Boxster. Miss the flat 6 in the Cayman. The 718S is faster than the Cayman and will go where ever you point it but it doesn’t have the sound that the Cayman had. When this lease is up may look at the Cayman GTS 4.0. We test drove a ‘20 Carrera 4S and it was a blast but it is hard to beat the handling in the mid-engine Cayman/Boxster.

I agree to an extent, it’s not going to be desirable for a long time. But look at the 911 SCs From the 80’s, I can remember picking them up for 12k in around 2000, and being written off by insurance for very minor fender benders. Now even to total shit basket case is 20k and 40k+ for 1/2 decent one. The 996 turbo and 996 is general is one of the most reliable 911’s (with a few upgrades) just ugly as sin. I’m sure they’ll have their day, just be a long time. Even the baring on the non turbo 996 is not a huge issue if you know your way around an engine.

edit, but back to the OP. It’s a shit swap at current market value unless there is some cash thrown in your way.

Don’t fall for it. :). The 911 will always be the marquee’s icon car, but lb for lb and hp for hp, the Cayman/Boxter twins are spectacular cars. The driving dynamics between the two are quite different, albeit Porsche keeps sneaking the rear engine on the 911 forward.

I’ve had a 930, and it was a blast testing the rear traction on that thing. I’ve had a Macan S and it too was a blast as a daily driver. I still miss it. I currently have a ‘15 981GTS that I drive about once a week. 2+ years into it and I enjoy it as much as the first drive with it. But as a daily driver? Perhaps as long as I had a backup cargo hauler. But as a solo car? I don’t think I’d do it.

I considered a move to the 911T, but chickened out on the price. The new 4.0 718 GTS is just as tempting.

For the OP: if you can afford the swap, and afford the swap back in a year if you decide it’s not your cup, then have at it! Just be prepared for the inevitable raised eyebrows you’re going to get. Haters are gonna hate unfortunately.

If they put the same motor in all cars the 911 would die

As of now my 13 year old car is just over 300hp to the ground and less than 3k lbs, runs the 1/4 in 12’s. It’s no rocket but in the turns it’s a blast.

If I really wanted to go stupid fast I would ditch the doors, roof & air conditioning for a Ducati but I’ve done it and it’s hot in the summer, cold in the winter and wet when it’s raining. Not to mention anything under 100mph is slow.

Agreed. Once I realized that pushing 150 on my ninja didn’t scare me any more, I wised up and sold it.

I’ve rode motorcycles since I was 3 years old so that’s 37 years before I decided to try something else. I never died, not even once. I don’t think bikes are dangerous but drivers are getting more distracted now days

Have had a few 911s, 105,000 is considerable mileage if you are going to DD it.
What's year and mileage on your Tacoma?
