While I agree some boats were too close, there is another, albeit more important, way to look at this.

For the first time in a loooooooonnnnnnnng time, we have people interested in the space program. During Apollo, there would be thousands (well, maybe hundreds) of boats on the water to watch the events. True, back then, it seems people had more common sense back then than they do today. Forcing people away at gunpoint, no matter how fun it may be, would not be a good idea.

Now, if we could just get some of the idiots to find some common sense, we'd be good.

Looks like the launchpad might have had a RUD post-takeoff as well.

Ground debris? Could also be some sort of exhaust entrainment with the firey stuff.

Scott Manley’s opinion on the Raptor fire.

Kinda like hearing it from Scotty, Chief Engineer for the Starship Enterprise :D

Did help that the Apollo recoveries took place out in the Pacific, harder to enforce an exclusion zone closer in to Florida as you say.

    True.

But there were plenty of boats on the water watching the launches.

    Mars 2020 launch through deployment..

Go to say I’m digging the cameras and transparency with this generation of launch providers.

Edit- VAB, pads 39A & 39B visible around the 30 second mark.

Also, did you pick out the rocket’s (and exhaust) shadow?

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Splashdown

Amazing stuff in this Wikipedia page... Just the maps alone are impressive.

Splashdowns were in both the Atlantic and Pacific from Mercury through Apollo.

Though some sites were relatively close to locations accessible by private boats, other sites were in no way accessible back then.

Nowadays, privately owned boats can pretty much reach every corner of the globe but it’d still be difficult if the zone was a few hundred miles out. Hence my recommendation for a few USN Seahawks a while back...

THE 2020 PERSEID METEOR SHOWER: Earth is entering a stream of debris from giant comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle, source of the annual Perseid meteor shower. If forecasters are correct, the display will peak on the nights of Aug. 11th through Aug. 13th with dozens of meteors per hour.

2020 twist - all the meteors are the size of Alaska.
