I run dot 5.1 in all my cars

But in all seriousness... WTH is DOT 5.1? I've only heard of 4

 

Dot 5.1 is a higher rating than dot 4. Handles more heat. NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH DOT 5

 

So whats DOT 5?!

Dot 5 is non corrosive silicon based fluid. If you want thag you have to have a completely dry and new brake system. It’s for classic cars because it won’t harm the paint. Pedal feel suffers but for show cars it works

Since brake fluid is corrosive is there a certain time frame or point of life to swap hard brake lines? I want to replace ALL items that wear out on this truck and I wonder if I'm being too anal with worrying about my hardlines.

It won’t eat metal lines. It eats paint.


It can cause internal corrosion if too much water gets into the fluid, but by the time that happens the car likely won’t stop well. Water mixes with the fluid.

 

Is there a particular Moderator I need to PM about preference issues? I found the alert change screen and disabled email notifications but I'm still getting emails

So since brake fluid is hydroscopic should I flush it every year?

 

Isn't 5.1 full synthetic too?

 

3 years is what we recommend out here. Every 6 months or so I just suck the Reservoir dry and refill it. Fluid goes bad just sitting in those plastic bottles anyway. All of my cars have great feeling brakes because of this.
