Any woodworkers?

Agreed, I've used mine several times for unusual projects. It was cheap and easy to construct.

 

Anybody have experience finishing mdf? I just finished the main part of a new workbench, 2 sheets of 3/4 mdf as the top and I'm looking for a way to help prevent mangling the surface. I dont expect it to take a beating like osb or plywood, or some other nice wood, but what kind of finishing would help prevent nicks and scratches? I've heard of people using shellac or epoxy, but I'm really new to this stuff.

 

Maybe a spray bedliner stuff? They have roll on or spray on

 

It looks like their clear coat is aspart-x which has to be quoted and ordered through them. I'm looking for something I can just pickup at the hardware store.

 

My work bench top is the same construction. I glued down a piece of hardboard (peg board without the holes). Has held up well for 4 years now. and I can replace cheaply if needed.

 

How thick of hardboard did you use? Wouldn't it be hard to replace if it was glued down? Using hardboard would likely be way better than any coat I could lay on top.

It would be a process but I would imagine it could be sanded or planed smooth and another sheet glue down

I've been sanding & finishing floors in Hawaii and Orange County for the last 30 years. There was a period when I worked in a shop setting doing a lot of very custom distressed floors.
Sometimes I fantasize about applying all of the sanding and staining techniques that I've picked up over the years into doing custom dining tables, etc.
We need to talk..

 

Expanding the tool set. Green kool-aid. Will definitely help out with making panels and the table top.

Tried my hand at a gradient board the other night. Used Hackberry(because Texas) and purple heart.

I know I was being sarcastic. Most money I've spent on a tool is for the Festool TS 75 and I've already made my money back on it. Domino is my next big purchase.

Update: I filed a lien today on the jacktards that are trying to stiff me for 6K.
Since they're claiming that I ruined their floors by sanding them too much I found the manufacturer (in Oregon) and they're sending me some samples to show how thick floors are and they can easily be re-sanded. When I bid the job I told the client that I sanded End Grain Douglas Fir floors before at the Coach store in a local mall and coincidentally the manufacture has photos of that floor on their website..

I've been sanding floors for 30 years, I'm certified by the stain manufacturer, certified by the finish manufacturer, certified by the sanding equipment manufacturer, my work is on the flooring manufacturers website, I haven't had a negative review in 15 years, the last client that I did prior to starting their job has already left me a 5 star review, the client that I'm doing this week (after their job) is already very happy with my work. So I'm pretty sure that I'm not the problem.
