I only ever worked at one place like that, and it was Pfaltzgraff, making stoneware.
I was a kiln operator there for a couple years, 1974-5, then went back to college.
And it was only because the General Manager was a great guy who had been in the trenches.
Whenever there was a problem, he'd come work it out personally with people.
He always tried for consensus.
Always had a good word for people, and he took the trouble to get to know everyone.

This is what they should be teaching MBAs, first and foremost.
It's amazing what can be done if you can gain the whole-hearted cooperation of employees.

I don't understand why they don't. It's easy. I want to be near their shoes one day doing something similar, but at least I want to be talking with the people where I'm at figuring out what can be done based on who's actually having to do it. The people doing the work know more than the people looking at the numbers on what is working and what isn't. Number don't tell you everything

Majority of businesses have a culture in management. Hire and promote their friends and who they like. Intelligence and ability to perform the job are not as important.
