Any good tips on bed mattresses, ive looked at the truck bed specific truckbedz mattresses but they are just a little too pricey for my liking. Found a queen sized in my barn which fit perfect in my 6 foot bed, but was 22 inches tall (leaving little head room). Will probably go with a queen size but 10-15 inches tall. Anybody got suggestions??

Are you sleeping alone or not?

If alone, I just use my camp pad. Low profile and it was warm in freezing temps?

If I was camping with someone else, I would either get cozy with my wife between the wheel wells or build a wood platform since I already have second tier 2x8s.

I don't recommend pump up mattresses. They lose a lot o air and even need to be repumped middle of the night. They also don't have great insulation properties. I would recommend a self inflating semi foam mattress or solid foam mattress.

A little long but you can fold it up when you close the tail gate.

If you want to get seriously nice and comfortable for some more money there is also Exped.com. I love mine, but they are pricey. I am sure others will chime in.

What are y'all using for the 5ft bed with or without the tailgate down? Have some kind of Napier air mattresses that a friend gave me. Doesn't seem that comfortable.

I've been looking at Megamat or a rollable memory foam mattress.

Have a cab height cap, 9ft tent

    I'm not building a platform

Second the auto inflate foam ones. I have a 4" one and it's quite comfortable, never used in the bed though..

I love my thermarest mondoking 3D (size large) for my 6’ bed. Its a self inflating foam pad. It’s a couple inches long but squishes a little when I close the tailgate which means it does not move in the bed. I found mine on sale for $100 on backcountry for the older 2018 model.

I got an exped mega mat when it was on sale. Pricey but it’s warm does leak and is low profile. I also heard the REI bed is good.

Jake, you probably haven't cut any corners on modding your Taco. Don't cut any on your mattress. You'll spend almost 1/3 of your time out in the wild on top of it, so it better be comfortable. https://www.mattressinsider.com/ A good one ain't cheap, but what mod is? They will build anything you spec out, cover it with any material you desire. Mine is a 5 1/2" memory foam mattress I can put in the back of the cab and fold out to fill the full space created when the front seats are slid forward and folded against the steering wheel and dashboard. Zip-off cover so I can wash it (I think that comes standard on all of their RV mattresses though.) I had them put a gatch down the center so I could fold it while driving. Still enough room on top when folded for someone to nap on top while traveling. ALMOST as comfortable as my memory foam mattress at home.

Spend the money, don't look back. Sufficient restful sleep is critical to squeezing full enjoyment from your limited time afield. Waking unrested is its own kind of hell, especially bothersome when you have a full day of proving that you're still 20 ahead of you, and don't have the comforts of home to soothe those symptoms of too little rest. Ever spend much of the day in camp recuperating from last night's fitful sleep? Or trying to slog through the day's activities feeling like shit? Takes much of the fun out of being out there. I've tried many mattress/pad options and most leave you to wake and feel like you slept in a shallow depression in the beach sand, exactly as you passed out. (I have extensive experience in that feeling in my misspent youth. Once woke with my left hand still gripping my salt shaker.) Headache all day? YEAH! That's fun HUH? My ass! It all starts with the right mattress. This is where you'll end up after trying those various camping pads and are left unfulfilled. Still, I'll be in my hammock before I use this. This is just for use during the heat of summer.

Oh, and by the way...you can do a sleeping platform of any configuration and height, forever changeable, using the wire shelving and posts shown in the pictures below. Quick, MUCH easier, much lighter, can use as shelving when not needed in the truck, or disassemble it and store it in a corner, out of the way. Unlike a wood platform. 2 wire shelves 24x36 longitudinally between the wheel wells, then one 24x48 across the back. Done.

A slab of closed cell memory foam? Should be cheap to come up with yourself. Or get one of those bed-in-a-box deals for like $100 if you can deal with it not being collapsible like an air mattress. Now, for sealing it... i don't know about that.
