Wheel Hub Assembly Suppliers?

My front right wheel bearing has gone bad.

I was told the first gen's wheel bearings are press fit. I don't have a press, so I figured I'd just buy a whole new hub assembly.

I'm having trouble finding any place that actually sells wheel hub assemblies, though.

There seem to be plenty of suppliers for '05+ tacos, but not earlier.

btw, I have an '02 4x4 3.4LV6 XtraCAB TRD MT.

 

The 1st gens don’t have a separate hub assembly like 2nd/3rd gens, it’s all built into the steering knuckle. You’d have to buy a new knuckle/spindle assembly, which may or may not have the bearing pressed in.
You’re much better off taking it to a machine shop who can press the bearing out and the new one in on your existing knuckle.

I bought my hubs from rock auto. They were around $40, the bearings and seals were about $200? I used koyo.

It wasn't the easiest job but not difficult, a good press is needed. You indeed have to press the bearing off of the knuckle, and it has to be In a certain order. There is a snap ring inside that holds the bearing in.

Where can I find spec sheets for the oil seal and snap ring dimensions? I'd like to replace those too.
While I'm at it, any other components along the axle I should check/ replace before they go bad?

What section did you find the hubs under? I've been trying to source those as well as bare spindles

 

@0xDEADBEEF rock auto doesn't seem to stock Koyo(OEM) bearings, so I'll probably get them from napa.

The wheel hubs are different for auto and manual hubs, I forgot to ask what you have.

I dont remember the issue I had with my snap ring, I think It was bent while removing. It's kind of a pain to get off. If you have manual hubs it would be a good time to clean and grease them.

 

@Old green toyota I have a Manual 4x4. Obviously, no Automatic Disconnecting Differential.
Unfortunately rockauto doesn't stock manual wheel hubs. Anyone know where you can get them?

 

I ordered the manual hubs from the link I posted above. Look at the last listing that opens up.

 

Mine's a 2002, and the part you're talking about doesn't show up.
So then I went to Durago's site and checked the part# . They say right there that it only fits Tacomas up to 2000.

But, the ADD wheel hubs for your '99 taco on rockauto do show up as well for my '02 taco.

This leads me to believe there was some change made to the non-ADD wheel hubs in 2001.

 

I don't think manual hubs were available for '01 - '04 as a factory option, I believe they are all ADD only. I'm not an expert in manual hubs by any means, but everything in the front suspension should fit all years of 1st gens, so you shouldn't have an issue with using hubs that are marked for a 2000.

 

Someone would have had changed it over as it wasn't an option after '00

Do you have external manual hubs? You will need to know to get the right bearings

 

You may be confusing wheel hubs and manual locking hubs.

 

Does ADD just mean that you can connect the front wheels to the transfer case with a button rather than manually doing it?
Because I have that.

I thought ADD was like some AWD vs. 4WD thing.
Why don't they call it EDD ffs (Electronic Disconnecting Differential)?

 

Yep, ADD is the 'electric' version of manual hubs, sort of. It disconnects the front driveshaft at the axle, instead of disconnecting the axle shafts at the hub.

 

If we're splitting hairs it's 'automatic' not just 'electric' lol my 98 is vacuum operated, nothing electric about it

@MissingRedstone above posters are correct, manual locking hubs were no longer an option after 00. And if you're switching to manual locking hubs then you need the wheel hub that @Old green toyota linked. The cv axles are different between WITH ADD and WITHOUT ADD where they come through the wheel hub.

Both w/ add and w/o add hubs will press the same into your spindles(steering knuckles), they use the same bearing

 

Ah yes, vacuum. I was trying to forget about that.

At least its not the thermal actuators GM had the bright idea of using.
