What Have You Done To Your 2nd Gen Tacoma Today?

Great job but make sure you coat all the lights with a UV protector - 3M makes a great one. Otherwise you will be re-buffing in 3 months from UV damage.

Sorry, it was rustier than it looked so I chopped the chrome And plastic up to fit in the dumpster. The steel pieces are going to the scrap yard

 

I didn't do it but my trusted local independent shop did, got the auto trans fluid changed and the spark plug.

 

I’m on board with OEM, though the parts look up online says that part doesn’t fit my 2015, and lists a different part number. I will confirm with a dealership I think.

But here’s the question how critical is this? Can I not drive off road til I swap it? I’m moving in a month, and am busy and this seems hard, I’d rather put it off till after the move, and don’t want to pay the $$$ for install. But we wanted to make a B line to Colorado the minute we move to go camping and off-roading. I have a slightly leaky boot (the the power steering fluid is ok) and slight clunk near lock.

I want to stall, but suppose I should suck it up huh? And do it sooner rather than later.

 

I used Gorilla Heavy Duty mounting tape. Cleaned both surfaces really well, and laid 2 bricks onto of the Gripit for about 1 week before putting it back i to the truck. Had several 95+ degree days since and it is still holding strong.

 

FWIW that is the exact rack I purchased for my truck, from that dealer too, and there are no changes between yours and mine when it comes to the rack that I'm aware of. It's worth double-checking for sure though.

As long as you keep fluid topped off it'll be fine. Clunk is probably your tie rod end. Speaking of which, racks don't come with TRE so you'll want to replace those as well when the time comes.

 

I remember seeing some Baja1000 video of him once where he had stopped in the pits and was complaining about his goggles falling off. One of his pit guys reached in with a staple gun and stapled the straps to his head. Now that is freaking hard core.

 

Yep, minimal tools and some elbow grease will get it done.

 

Thanks. I wasn’t even thinking about tie rods. Duh. I will swap the rack, the inner and outer tie rods at the same time. I also saw a cracking but intact CV boot. This truck is endless projects

The foam tape that wouldn't hold left behind so much residue I figured, in for a dime, in for a dollar. I took apart the armrest, applied a fair amount of gorilla glue and applied constant pressure for maybe 10 minutes. Now it's rock solid with no visible damage.

 

He definitely earned his nickname.

Today I did something really special. I got polyurethane all over the back half of my truck, on my expensive cell phone, on my expensive shades, all over my tools, and all over myself. As I was driving home I was getting really nervous and started driving like a mad man (more of a mad man than normal lol). My eyelids were getting extremely sticky. Took a shower when I got home with paint thinner, then oxy clean on a washcloth, then Ivory, and then every foo foo smelling stuff my wife had in the shower. I smell like a flower bed in the middle of a paint booth.

So that is what I did to my Tacoma today, I applied a shiny coat.
