Wicked big brakes for 17" wheels

This may finally be it, at least for this taco... more brake rotor and caliper than any 17" wheel should have to swallow. And leave it to the OEMs to have come up with the parts, Brembo and Porsche. When these popped up on my radar some years back, I knew a set would have to be placed into some project... that time has come.

The calipers are massive cast mono block aluminum and forged steel units that hold six 36mm pistons. The total squeeze area should play nice with the Tacoma. The main caliper body is aluminum, and is specially designed to sneak larger brakes into regular sized wheels. The main bridge is cast right in place, a feature that is becoming more common in high performance apps. Being thin in the areas that are critical to reducing flex, created, well, flex! So Brembo added a trick additional forged steel bridge that bolts around the main assembly, it is incorporated into the mounting bracket.

There's more to come, but for now, here's a 360 x 36mm rotor stuffed into a large barrel TRD 17" forged wheel, it has room to spare.

Massive pads! Double the size of stock.

This buggy is going to stop.

Why? TVS1900 and heavy real world use.

Calipers are $1050 for a pair, new. Pads $50 and up. Rotor and hat cost is up in the air, as it will be custom with bolt on hat. Also adapter is unknown.

Nice catch. Calipers 08 Cayenne Turbo w/ 18" wheels. One year only in this country. Rotors are Macan.

Rear brakes will likely be from the same vehicle.

I have various Stoptech Toyota kits on the shelf, this will offer more capacity and... I like to do my own thing.

The idea isn't necessarily to stop the vehicle sooner, but to allow repeated heavy applications. No offense taken.

 

Any mods to the brake master cylinder required? Proportioning valves etc.?

 

The rear axle will likely be a Toyota Tundra 9.5".

 

Ah, wow that gonna work awesome for heavy applications! Gonna be a ton of work to make it fit. Getting stance is interesting me to because the track width is so much wider on the tundra. Good luck!

 

These calipers have 6% less piston area than stock, so the master can handle it. If more is required, there are bolt on solutions. Balancing the system will require studying other systems, both OEM and aftermarket.

The Tundra axle will be narrowed.
