I have a 2004 very loaded 4x4 taco that is extremely capable in any terrain.
Every now and then I will talk with another Tacoma owner and they always ask "does yours have the E Locker..diff locker" ...whatever it's called.

I dont have it but what am I missing out on ?
    Is it a big deal?

If you don't have it and have no problems wheeling the terrain you wheel then it's not a big deal.

But, you're obviously not wheeling very hard terrain if you don't understand why a locker is very useful.

    Rear locker is very useful

Front and rear lockers are even better

Makes both real wheels spin together, instead of all the power going to the one with the least traction. Handy offroad.

Technically; 4x4 with open diffs is only 2wd. A locker makes it a 3wd truck, I’d argue it’s 50% more capable.

It's a nice extra tool in the bag of tricks. Usually its used when really off kilter and the rear axle has one tire with zero traction.

It's also nice to engage prior to a crazy challenge, as it reduces the speed needed to get through.

Your use of the word "any" is limited if you've not found a place where a locker would be useful.

IMO a locker is probably the best upgrade you can do to your truck to make it more offroad capable. Good tires are up there too but locker will allow your truck to make it through more obstacles and at a controlled pace. I don’t use mine that often but it has gotten through or out of situations I would have been stuck or damaged the truck badly had I not had it. It is not for everyone but if you get your truck in hairy situations I wouldn’t be without it.

Exactly. I use it to take the drama out of climbing something even mildly challenging for the wife. It eliminates having to hit the gas and brake and hopping that can make her nervous. I even used it while wheeling on wet roads in the Alpine loop. The drop offs really made her nervous so I locked the wheels for less chance of spinning and her shitting her pants.

For me all that wheel hop = stress on the drive train and axles. So I use it sometimes even when it's not really needed.

I agree I have front and rear lockers on my 95 , its unbelievable where this truck will go with lockers , but my rule of thumb is go in in 2 wheel drive with a rear locker if you get in a bad situation turn in those front hubs and more then likely you can get out , a winch is also a good idea if everything else fails

I hardly ever use my locker in the warmer months. Mines sees the most use when the snow falls and it gets deep and crusty.

Locker + Chains + High rpm = do what I want
