So, I come home last night and find my back gate open. Which after closer examination I find that some d bag disassembled my air conditioner in my backyard to harvest the copper in the coil. He left everything else. To make matters worse my neighbor saw the whole thing and thought it was me.

I guess I know what I'm getting for Christmas.

The police came by last night and filed a report. He said they have been targeting houses w/ for sale signs in the yard (which mine has). They said they've scared them off a couple times but local laws won't allow them to chase the perp unless a violent crime has taken place.

Violent disassembly of someone else's property does not = violent crime? If I catch someone trying this after they break in my padlocked gate the cops won't have to chase the perp because I will do the violent disassembly of said someone & put 5.00 of quarters in a sock and beat them with what they were looking to make off that lame shit!

This crap makes me want to put a fake unit outside the gate and hook it to 480 and when they try to take it apart they get barbequed.....or just put an IED in it, but that'd be a mess. Electricity is cleaner and neater.

This is a problem everywhere. We had a trailer on a piece of property on Smith Lake here in Alabama along with 3 other couples. Luckily we sold our trailer last summer. The guy that bought it from me said that someone stole the copper out of the AC units on all 4 trailers last week. From what he was told they can get about $60 worth of copper out of 1 unit.

    That happens a lot.
In AZ if you take copper in to sale it, it must still have the coating on the wire. If it is stripped it is no good. The coating has a lot of info that can be used to track the location or item it was installed in. It is sad but in AZ the have even stolen brass off of tombstones etc.
