Just weighed my truck and TT...WOW eye opener

So I am off for our first camping trip this year. I have had this trailer since new. It is a 2014 KZ Sportsman 245BHS (Bunk House). Dry weight is 4470 lbs, gross is 6000lbs. My tanks are empty too. I just had it weighed for the first time. The trailer and truck were fully loaded and ready for travel so the weight is accurate. Let me tell you what an eye opener for sure. I did not realize how heavy my set up was. I have towed this trailer with this truck everywhere. I live in RI, we have been as far as Nova Scotia, did that trip last year, what a ride that was. So my weight was Gross Combined weight at 11,125 lbs. Our Tacoma's are only rated for 11,200 lbs. I guess it is time for me to upgrade to a Tundra. At least before my next long trip next May to DC. I'm glad i'm not traveling too far this time around, only about 3 hrs north to New Hampshire, about 130 miles.

 

What have you added as payload to your truck and tt that accounts for almost 3000lbs?
That's a lot of cargo.
I started loading my 4300 lb trailer with essentials and I weighed everything I put in which included kitchen, bedding, bathroom supplies. I'm about 80% loaded and with my 2 batteries, my cargo is only about 400-425 lbs.

 

Well, the larger tires on the truck will account for some added weight as well as the cap on the truck. I always take fire wood with me when I go camping, so there is that weight in the bed of the truck. Then there is the camper, in the front cargo area there is a lot of camping supplies, back up grill, grill grates for the fire pit, tools just in case I break down, food, clothing Adirondack chairs, smoker, 2 full propane tanks, (2) 12vdc batteries, basically all the essentials we need to survive for a week. Everything adds up I guess and adds up very fast. Oh, and I have a Hensley weight distribution hitch on my TT that weights a lot. But it functions better than any hitch I have ever used. Absolutely no sway at all. This just proves my point to my wife that we need a bigger truck. I had a motive for doing this, it's called getting what I want, my way. I've been married a long time, there are ways around arguments...I won this one for sure. I see a new Tundra in my very close future.

 

Did you check the weight at each wheel also? It’s possible you are over the axle weight limit or the payload capacity of the truck while still being under the gross combined weight limit. Also, was everyone in the truck while you weighed it? People weight a lot.

 

I did not get the weight at each axel. I had my set up weighed at a quarry plant that I have worked at in the past. I work for Caterpillar and I worked on some of there equipment and its next to my house. They only weigh combined weight. I do understand what you are saying, but either way at this point it is still considered a lot of weight for these trucks. I did have all people in the truck, just me and my wife. knowing what I know now about the weight, I will jus need to upgrade my truck. Oh darn

Tundra is the way to go. Your towing experience will be so much better. Just make sure you get the 38 Gallon tank so you're not stopping so often to fill up. Luckily, the Tacoma will bring good resale value so it'll prevent a loss on the tacoma. Orrrrrrrr. just keep both

 

I just purchased the exact truck. It should tow my camper much better. I pick it up on Saturday. Can't wait, although i am sad to see my Tacoma go. It was a fantastic worry free truck. Toyota in my opinion is the only way to go.

 

How did it work out? I have the same truck just as crew max.

 

I'm betting you're over payload. My 2007 is equipped very similar to yours with a cap on it. My payload is 1200 lbs, GVWR 5450. I just hauled some old furniture off to the landfill and with me in the truck it weighed 4700 lbs as I left. That only leaves me 750 lbs payload with me driving. My cap is about 200 lbs, I'm 220 and the math works out just right. I'd have 1200 lbs payload without the cap.

Assuming your trailer is 6000, that is almost 800 lbs on the truck. Not counting the WDH or any other gear and passengers inside the truck.

 

And this is why i just traded in my 2013 tacoma for a 2020 Tundra DC TRD Offroad. I picked it up this past Tuesday. Haven't driven it much and haven't towed the camper yet, but i sure do love all the room in the truck and how it rides and drives. I won't have to worry about the wieght anymore, at least not until I get a larger trailer.

 

Absolutely Love the truck, can't wait to put the trailer behind it and see how it handles.

2020 Tundra TRD Sport 4x4 / SR5 Upgrade PKG. I can't believe how nice this truck rides and drives. Very smooth, my brother has a 2018 Chevy Silverado LTZ and it does not ride as smooth a my Tundra. One thing I like about this truck is how high up i sit in it. It's like i'm sitting on top of the world, I'm a short guy at only 5'6" so this truck is awesome. I don't think i will be doing any mods to this truck other than the tow mirrors, bed cover and window visors. I like the truck just the way it is.

 

The Tundra is a hog when it comes to MPG. You may have been better off with a Diesel 3/4 ton and had better power and mpg.

I WILL NEVER buy a diesel. I am a diesel mechanic and i am not a fan of a diesel. They are over priced and cost a boat load of $$$ to maintain and repair. They are not worth the money

 

Just curious what the door sticker says for max payload and max gcvw?
