How strong is your aftermarket steel HC bumper?
    F035CA31-C4D4-4820-BC68-5119D9E91B2A.jpg

    Long story short

Passenger side.. I was driving on the highway, there was a parked car on the side of the road.. I got pushed over and tried to swerve around the car, broke my passenger side tire rod and and hit the left side of both bumpers on the guard rail.

I’m aware of all the resins why my tire rod could have snapped and that I should have upgraded my UCLs and LCLs when doing the 5100’s.

My question: (to all of you who have high clearance aftermarket steel bumpers) Would you expect this to be the result after hitting a guard rail. I guess I expected they would hold up a littler better, but the rear is pretty bent up..

Any welders out there think this would be possible to bent back into place and weld on or is a bumper like this toast?

    Here is the result.

Looks like the truck rode up on the guard rail right behind the right rear tire. That would bend the bumper up at its weakest point. (The front edge.) It's not designed for that.

Damn what sucks is will insurance cover any of the aftermarket products that weren't listed on policy?

Given the shape of high clearance rear bumpers it doesn't actually surprise me that it would get this bent with a good impact. Front bumpers have a lot more structure from all of the angled steel welded together bracing the other pieces and high clearance rears are long, narrow/flat pieces of steel whether they're thick steel plates and welded or not. Hopefully you have a decent insurance policy to back you up.

Is the bumper not tied into the frame at the front of that wing near the tire?

If no then that damage seems reasonable

If my frame isn’t messed up.

So I’m pretty sure the front bumper will be fine with some welding and mods but would anyone here attempt to try and bend the rear bumper back into place or am I taking crazy here?

yeah unfortunately I only had liability as I had just moved back to the Midwest from Arizona and wasn’t using much.

I’ve decided to swap my box out and go with a flatbed..

Any recommendations on fabricators who would weld a simple flat rear bumper with hitch for my flatbed? Sheet or tube.

The knuckle is definitely bent. The UCA is probably bent. The LCA might be bent. There’s also a slight chance that the frame could be bent. Look at the part of the frame that’s angled outward towards the cab mount. Look for a buckle or a dented in area. If the tie rod came back and hit the shock, the shock will probably be bent.

I’m unfortunately living back in Minnesota for the foreseeable feature. Have to change my profile.

I am all for having a clean truck but to me it looks like you increased the high clearance bumperss capabilities in the rear. Sad to see a messed up taco tho.

Even though the rear looks twisted upward. Might be able to salvage and do an even vertical cut right where the HC begins. Work on getting the rear bumper to angle back downward. The take the HC piece in a more manageable size and massage it back to form. Then re weld it. Grind the welds flat. Re coat it.

Just curious, did your rear HC bumper have supports like these, that tied into where it’s bolted to the frame?
