We bought my wife a new car last year, but kept her old one for me to daily drive and avoid putting so many miles on my truck. It’s a 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe, 85000 miles, new tires, brake pads on all 4 corners, new rotors up front. Really I’m great shape besides a slow oil leak.

we’re taking the COVID social distancing stuff pretty seriously and I’m not thrilled about going on test drives with dozens of strangers. Considering going the carmax route, but unsure of how much of a hit I would take going there vs private sale. I’m confident about getting 6,000 private.

anyone have any advice, experience with carmax, or tips on how to easily do a private party sale?

The fastest way to sell your truck if you have a price better than every other truck. The difference between trade in and Retail probably about $4,000. You can get your value by putting your truck into Carvana, vROOM, and CarMax... The first two you can get online in about 15 minutes they'll make an offer to buy your vehicle. Then you will know wholesale trade value you can be the salad or tack on a few thousand and sell it privately. Trucks are much easier to sell privately than cars

In case anyone ever searches this trying to find an answer, carmax offered me 4,000 on what I am pricing at 6,000 retail. Their offer was slightly more than I would expect for a typical “trade in” value.

I'm about to list my old Jeep in a few weeks. I'm not sure how I'm going to deal with meeting up with people and test driving. I just think in going to mostly do as the dealership did when I bought my Tacoma. Wear a mask no hand shakes. Probably will use a disinfectant cleaner on the major places of touch after showing the vehicle. I think covid is a risk but not something I'm going to totally stop doing things in life over. Just be smart and manage risk.

all you can do is mask up,gloves, disinfectant, distancing, test drives maybe should be done solo, its like going to the grocery store although your at risk you still mentally have to get food and live life

Masks, disinfectant, hand sanitizer, definitely need to clean high contact surfaces after every showing. I'm not sure about leaving people go out on a test drive alone that I don't know. Again it's a risk they won't come back, dealerships always copy your ID that could work here too. If I get a vibe someone isn't too trustworthy I'd still go with them.

I just don't want to make the process too different for both sides.

i think most people understand that nowadays theres going to have to be more stringent Personal protection as a given and probably appreciate the fact your going to great lengths to ensure safety for all. if they test drive solo just make sure they leave the keys to thier car with you maybe or sit in the back seat area

Well, then go to Carmax, get a number, and measure the hit against your confident $6k.

Good points and good idea about leaving their keys with you. I was thinking I'd ride in the back if I went along. As far as ID I'd take a close up photo of their license with my phone, that should be good enough.

I think most people will appreciate that you are being careful to be safe for you and them. It really shouldn't be hard to do most of the things. they are really simple precautions but things we didn't have to think about pre covid. Well not all of them you always had to be careful not to get scammed and hussled.

Around here we would have to go to a notary and tag service to complete a private vehicle sale. I have to see what and how they are running during this time.

You kind of get ripped off this way, but if you're that serious about COVID, try selling it/trading it in at a dealership. Right now they can't seem to keep cars on the lot so they're hurting for inventory so you may get more money, plus then you only have to deal with one or two strangers who have likely already been at least minimally screened by their employer.

    I'd take the 4,000 from carmax. Most I'd pay for a O7 SantaFe 1,000 maybe 2,000.

I would agree with that if you really are afraid of dealing with strangers even with the precautions I was talking about. Another option would be to see if a used car dealer would consider consignment sales. Some independent dealers do this. Especially if it's a nice car that will sell well that they have a hard time getting at auction or something in a price range they can turn over fast. They won't make as much on it it's still could be worth their time since they have nearly nothing invested in it as inventory.

Try Carvana. Lots of Tacoma owners have received fantastic offers.

I noticed when I was shopping for a truck CAvana had a lot of gen 2 Tacomas and we're asking top prices for them too. Of course used Tacomas aren't cheap anywhere. I just think Carvana is charging Alot for the all online experience and the satisfaction guarantee.

Agreed. I found mine through Auto Trader after checking Car Gurus, Auto Tempest, Carvana, and a few others. Car Gurus tended to have the cheapest I saw, but wasn't what I was looking for. I believe Carvana and Cars.com were the most expensive, typically.

I decided to by new and was using CarGurus and cars dot com. I actually was just using them to get in contact with the sales manager or internet sales manager if they had a truck that fit what I wanted. I just emailed them what I was looking for. I'd give an outline of what trim level, colors I'd consider and accessories I might like. Then tell them I was contacting dealers in a 75 mile radius and to give me the most competitive on something that fit that. I'd tellI them about how soon I was ready to buy and about how much I was planning to put down so they took me more serious. I hate to go to one dealership and haggle it's just not me. I get mad and walk out easily. I feel like I got a good deal considering the market these days.

Yeah that's what happened here. They can haggle more on new than used. As was explained to me, everyone has their most competitive price available on the internet because everyone else does, so there's little room to move on used. However, I was still able to coax more money out of my trade.

Wear a mask, state in your add that they must wear a mask and hit the hand sani in order to test drive. You hit the sanitizer before and afterward. Crack the windows.
