So clearly he's aware of the insurance rates and higher cost of vehicle ownership and can most likely afford them without issue.

depending on the year the was a problem with the intermediate bearing was a the biggest thing I think it was the mid 2000s year was not to bad of a fix but could go out at any time that would be the biggest thing to look at

Pics of all your cars please. I don't care for 2 door vehicles. But you've pretty much had all the 2 door vehicles that I would possibly consider buying.

I never owned a Porshe, but I used to drive a BMW 1600 offroad a lot and it sucked. I bottomed out once and my friend’s feet got stuck under my drivers’ seat because the unibody floor bent up and pinned his feet there. I had to jump up and down on the floor to free him. Keep the truck!

The IMS bearings weren't an issue for the 996 turbos IIRC.

That is a lot of miles on that Porsche.

When I think of buying a used Porsche (or any other high-end vehicle), I think of finding someone who barely drove it, say a weekend cruiser, person who owns multiple vehicles, has more money than understanding of value, over-maintained, etc.

    Then you get a deal.

You might be asking for trouble with this one. But, as someone else suggested, if you want to do it, pay a local Porsche dealer to give it a thorough look-over, and a good discussion of future maintenance costs.

    Just my opinion

Anticipate the higher maintenance costs, make sure you are good on the IMS issue and enjoy. Porsche makes great cars and I like the color enough I bought one the same color a few years ago :)

We all make them at one time or another, just stings less when a few thousand of your internet friends egg you on.:D:thumbsup::drunk:
For me, when I need a Porsche fix, you can drop a few hundred on and hour and a half at the Porsche experience center in either Atl. or CA:yes:

It's a really good thing I'm halfway between both of those experience centers. The travel costs make that few hundred bucks ~$1250.

I got lucky enough to get two tickets to a Porsche Drivers Event a few years back. It was quite the experience to drive them all on the track with only moderate limits applied.

Luckily my best friend live in ATL and set it up when we visited. We usually get together once or twice a year. Our other best friend (we were linemates in HS playing hockey) comes up from Florida, so it is a long weekend of debauchery and gluttony. We are all into speed. One owns a Viper, another a BMW M4 and I have a BMW Z3 along with a 67 Mustang vert with a 408 stroker.
They call the 911 turbo a sneaky ninja for a reason. Hole shots with that thing will pin you and make you light headed. What a blast.

Here they are and I miss them all... not too much the Lotus, it was somewhat uncomfortable at long trips and the viper was a gas monster. You can tell my favorite color is yellow on sport cars! The Supra I bought it from a mechanic, minor accident reported. I also added my MR2 turbo which it loved as well.

quick fact: 996 turbo motor is a Mezger motor, it does not have the IMS bearing, it is a completely different design and configuration than the M96 motor

I have not been following this thread and tried very hard not to jump into the pool... HOWEVER here is my .02

the 996 turbo motor is amazing, Mezger motors are amazing.... food for though, the 997 gt3 cars have mezger motors...

Mezger recently past away, this very well may add to the value of an mezger motor IMHO...

also: the higher the miles on any porsche the BETTER!!!! the lower the miles = the possibility shit hasnt failed nor has been discovered simply due to lack of use...

IMHO the 996 turbo will not fall much more than their current value, 991.1 991.2 and now the 992 prices are so much more than any 996 or 997 and it simply makes ZERO sense...

OP if this type of car serves your daily needs, then hell yea trade that sucker in and take the Pcar, if only for a year or two I would bet you get close to dollar for dollar on your return

LOLz at all the false perceptions of porsche costing an arm and a leg for service and being unreliable... sure they not cheap to fix, but people dont realize how reliable they and how little maintenance they in fact require... that is when you drive them daily and properly... let it warm up and let the rpms climb, the car will live a long life.

I will say this though, if and when possible keep the taco and add the 911 into the stable... best of both worlds

996Twin turbo's are nice cars, I have one for a few years. Pretty reliable but once something down happen, it can easily be in the thousands. Just be prepared for that and if nothing goes wrong they are really fun to have and drive.
