    Running the Nevada BDR...

...Nevada's BDR is known to be a bit different than some of the others. Most interesting is the temperature differential between the northern and southern ends of the route - even as the north is still covered in snow, temps in the south reach over 100°F. For that reason, a lot of travelers split the trip into two - doing the southern route in winter or early spring and the northern bit come summer.

But not us; we're not that smart. Well no, that's not it exactly - it's just that the time we had to do the trip happened to mean we'd be doing it all in one shot. And we'd be doing it from north-to-south, just because we thought that'd be logistically easier.

At least, that was the plan...

Has anyone applied a waterproofing coating to their tent canvas before? Last time out in our Tepui Kukenam 3 Ruggedized we had a night of nonstop rain and woke up to damp corners that weren't covered by the rain fly. Everything under the rainfly was bone dry, but the exposed tent corners that got wet seeped through.

Found this thread ( https://www.rme4x4.com/threads/waterproofing-and-adding-mildew-prevetion-for-a-roof-top-tent.68620/ ) that looked promising but someone noted that the chemicals used in this stuff is pretty toxic.

Not sure if rubbing wax on the canvas would help (like some do with canvas clothes) or if there is something else on the market that isn't toxic?

I think there's a waterproofing spray that can be applied

Anyone running a RTT on their prinsu roof rack? Any issues with weight and size? I don't want to run bed racks.

I run one on a sherpa rack with no issues. Getting it on and off is a little bit of a pain though.

I tired to last year. I do not recommend the way I did it..

I took the whole tent off the frame and washed it with some Nikwax products. Hung it to dry. Put it back on. Whole process took most of the weekend

The end result was that water did bead off nicely.. but only for a few months. After that the coating started to fade. If I were to do it again I would use some sort of spray, and leave the tent together. But honestly Im not sure its worth it. Ive just learned to take a small tarp if its going to be a really bad storm (only done that once). Otherwise I just keep stuff inside the tent from touching the walls and it doesnt seem to bother.

How do you keep the mattress from touching the walls?

The poor performance in wet weather really has me wanting to ditch my RTT.

For as expensive as these tents are, they really aren’t good at tent things.

...Anyone who's camped with me knows that I'm always a fan of finding a ridge along which to camp, and my hope was this part of the route - which crossed a ridgeline - would be a great place for us to stop for the night. Clearly - and perhaps obviously - previous adventurers shared my preference and as we reached the ridgeline, a lightly-travelled trail dove off the main road to the south - into BLM land!...

Central California truck camping trip. Did solo camping for the first night in SLO area. Our scouts saved us a spot in Big Sur earlier that afternoon. I was on the way up but was starting to doze off behind the wheel. Thanks to God, his Holy Spirit helped lead me to find this really cool spot in the night. The morning sunrise was an amazing surprise. It was my first time camping along California’s central coastline. It was really neat to see the clouds that rolled in along the coast from up above them. Note: it seems to get super windy up there. Good to wear some ear plugs/ear pros when trying to go to sleep if you’re a light sleeper.

My rack bars run parallel to the mounting bars on the tent. Can you measure the distance between the mounts on the tent? I want to adjust my bars before I pick up the tent. Also, can you post pics of the way yours is mounted?

    Never enough
Here's some pics of how I mounted it. Got the measurements of the middle of the rails, however, when I spoke to 23Zero when ordering my rack they said each one is slightly different so bear that in mind.

I just used their rails, the channel mounts they send out and mounted directly to my rack at 6 points. If you want any other pics or have more questions feel free to hit me up!

Thank you sir! That’s what I’m gonna have to do, bolt mine directly to the rack. Appreciate the measurement
