Yeah sucks but anytime spend in the woods is good imo. Beautiful views. How was the traffic on the trail?

I think we might give the me in the hammock w/ Snoop and Lexi in the tent w/ Potts another go.
I wouldn’t mind this being our set up for wheeling and backpacking since it is light on weight and packs nicely.
If the hammock thing doesn’t work out with Snoop, we’ll probably end up with a 3 person Nemo Dagger because pro deal.

ps. We should ride bikes and drink some whiskey soon

Disaster Creek through Paradise Valley, we saw no one. On the PCT, we saw maybe a dozen people. And on the trail from the PCT to Boulder Lake, we saw no one. But there were two groups set up and camping at the lake.

Yep, that’s the one thing about hammock sleeping that sucks.
Glad you’re okay. Had a friend go through his and bruised his tail bone

Yes we should! I just fixed my rear wheel on my hard tail so I’m game on. Going back packing next thurs-sun up in Hoover wildnerness but the weekend after that could be good for a ride! Still have some Blanton’s left over to share thankfully .

I’ve been backpacking with only hammocks the past three years. I’d done the sleeping pad up until this year. I caved and bought a JRB underquilt, 20F Washington to be exact. The sleeping pad is better than nothing but I could never get it to work right I’m my ENO sub7. I would slide all over on it and wasn’t very warm. I set up my hammock with this underquilt in my backyard the other evening and without my sleeping bag I was sweating. I’m pretty excited for it and it’s only 21 oz.

I don’t think there is a ton of weight savings with a hammock vs a tent, but I prefer sleeping off the ground whenever I can. My underquilt, tarp, hammock, and suspension system adds up to 31.8 oz. My rain fly and stakes are a bit heavy though, at 14oz. So all in I’m pretty much at the weight of an ultralight tent but whatever. All packed up with my fly fishing stuff I’m in the 25lb range for 3-4 nights which is good for me.

I’m sure it’s gonna be great. Last time I went there were so many people hiking half dome. This year I’m guessing you’ll be way more secluded. You starting with it or ending?

My hammock. underquilt and tarp system weighs a little more than my ground tent system, but part of that is that I use a very large tarp. I still prefer to use it for the sleep comfort and having the large tarp area for use as an "office". Most of my backpacking these days is trail work and monitoring, so people are often coming by camp to ask questions and having the big tarp is handy.

I'm able to use a lighter sleeping bag with the underquilt which helps to level out the weight differences.IMG_20170716_195952_399.jpg

Ouch, yeah my experience was no where near painful.

I'm still waiting a new drive train for my hard tail but can go as is. I know I'm working on the 4Runner at least one day that weekend but I'm sure we can figure something out. I still have your number and plenty of whiskey to try.

And damn, I didn't realize there were so many hammocks from ENO now. I've had my double nest for a good 7+ years now and IIRC, they only had that and the single. It does seem like an underquilt will be the way to go though. In the few minutes I spent in the in the hammock before it ripped, I already noticed my elbows were off the pad and would've been a little chilly all night.

I'm not expecting it to be much more weight savings than the tent (Nemo Hornet Elite 2P @ 2lbs 1oz) but I'm also not super weight conscious. If I was, I'd start by packing smarter in the food department.
Full packed this weekend, I think I was pushing close to 30 lbs. But that was 6L of water (for me and the dogs), 12 cups of dog food, sleeping bag for the dog, plus all my stuff. I think we've put off another trip until their harnesses get here.

Best of luck! I'm only a few hours down the road if you need anything

Not to derail (hah!) the subject too badly, what drive train are you going with?

I started with the double nest also, probably also 7 or 8 years ago, and then I picked up a Sub 7 on closeout for like $30 so couldn't pass up that deal. It was definitely a huge adjustment going from the double to a lightweight single. In the double the sleeping pad was fine. In the single it's just awkward and uncomfortable.

30 lbs with 6L of water? That's almost half your total load in water! That'll be huge to get your dogs carrying some of their load.

Was planned on doing a mix of Sram's new GX and X01 52-tooth Eagle but who knows when that'll be readily available. Might end up with 12-speed XT - it's been a while since I've had a Shimano drivetrain.

Sounds like I have some hammock research to do but the ENO SuperSub looks nice.

30lbs might be a little conservative now that I think about it. Either way, carrying all the weight for backpacking without backpacking isn't super fun.
I had 1L in a nalgene, 2L in my bladder from my biking fanny pack, and normal 3L bladder. If I can get that 2L in the dog harness, it'll be great.

Nice. I'm rocking 11 speed XT with the Sunrace 11-46 cassette (better increments than the Shimano one) and have no complaints with a 30T front chainring. The price is pretty hard to beat on 11 speed stuff these days.

And you pretty much just did nature cross-fit, so at least you got a work out in :D. I've been carrying less and less water since I never go anywhere that doesn't have lots of water access. I typically carry 1L or 1.75L and then just keep my filter handy to replenish as needed on the trail, and really hydrate before and at the end of the day. For the dogs, you may not really need to carry much water if you're comfortable with them drinking from natural sources. This is all hypothetical for me though because my dog can barely hike 5 miles.

That’s pretty much how I’m looking at it. Great hike to see where we are fitness level wise, which we both felt great about.

We let the dogs drink from natural sources, as long as it was running water. Solid poops so I guess that’s good. We didn’t know what to expect from them so we overpacked water as a better safe than sorry sort of deal.

Hoping you guys have a great trip this weekend!

I have one of their sleeping bags. The spoon shaped ones and I love it! Great for side sleepers.
