I called just differentials, was quoted at 3400......

 

Yeah crazy big. Labor alone was 1500, not sure how these dudes are doing it for 1700 flat

 

I figured at that price, all we were getting new gears, pinion crush sleeve (if we even have one), and seals. I went for it anyway,‘my truck still has low miles.
The cart they wheeled in had a few dozen shims of each size so they had those already.
I’d expect they inspect the bearings/races but did not replace unless excessive wear was noted.

Just finished my 500 mile break in. Replaced oil with Torco 85w140 racing gear oil and I’m very happy with how my truck drives now. 5.29s with OV tune and it finally drives like it should have from the factory.

My only complaint is the rear fill plug was crazy tight. Had to use a 1/2” impact with a fresh battery to remove. And the front drain plug I had to use a breaker bar and my foot. Other than that everything else seems good so far.

 

I recommend replacing the front diff drain plug with the lexus drain plug 90341-24016 since the Toyota plug can easily be stripped. IMHO it's worth the $20 price tag.

 

Bummer they continue to overtorque even though I provided them this feedback. Bolt almost was stuck in the socket for me. PITA to get out.


My gears have been good to me. Done a few thousand miles on the rear and 100 miles on the front with some decent off roading stress. No issues. I gave them a 4/5 on Yelp because they overtorqued to the point I would have had issues if I was away from home and the low rear diff oil. 4/5 is still good to me and I would still recommend based on the price. Don’t think you’ll find anything cheaper.

 

How did your guys oil look? Mine was like this. Does that look normal? Wanted to stick with amsoil so went with thier 75-140 severe gear. No leaks for me and torque was good

 

Is everyone changing the front and rear at 500 or do you just do the rear and wait until you do 500 miles of 4WD to change the front?

 

I just did rear. From my understanding of it’s not in 4wd it’s not breaking in?

 

Just change the rear and wait until you have 400-500 miles in 4 wheel high then change front.

It's best to break in your front diff off road with slippage. I wouldn't do it any other way. Your front isn't used all the time like the rear so it's not critical to change fluid until it's actually used.

 

Just changed the diff oil, the plugs required a breaker bar but they were not stripped.

My front looked a bit like this, I don't know if having the ECGS bushing install had anything to do with it

Toyota uses a system called ADD (automatic differential disconnect) and the gears are always spinning.

Miguel told me just the three 15 to 20 min drives in 4WD with cool off periods after was sufficient for the front gears FWIW. I put a couple hundred miles on them still. Probably wouldn’t hurt to just wait like others have.

This is true but your gears are not under any load.
