I heard that they cause the light to come on. Surprised that Stant doesn't address that issue....or that there isn't a lock on that door.

Get a code reader and erase it. Locking gas caps don’t do anything when I can punch a hole in the plastic gas tank. Also the fill neck is siphon proof. There are generally two opinions on locking gas caps. One is “I’ve had it for years and no problem” and the other is “my check engine light turned on right after I put it on, gonna return it”. Last thing is that some locking gas caps have the same key for every single one made and I have actually removed a stant locking gas cap by putting in a random key and twisting hard.

A locking gas cap made the crappy gas thief drill my 1st gen’s gas tank after they tried drilling the cap and couldnt open it. And if you think getting that fixed was expensive, check out what it costs with parts and labor on a 3rd gen.
Fk locking gas caps, never use them. Besides, they don’t even need a drill to puncture the tank anymore, so its even easier than before.

Disconnect the negative battery cable for 30 seconds or so.

This method will work, but also potentially disrupt pending codes, saved settings in some things, etc etc. Just like will happen when your battery eventually goes dead.

An alternative is that most parts houses have a scan tool that they will read your code for free. Just ask them to reset it while you are there. Of course you need to have the OE cap in place before restarting the truck.

Write down what they read. IF the code comes back, and it's the same one, you may have another problem that just happened to coincide with your cap change. But doubtful.

Personally, barring having the right tool, I'd just do the battery deal.

Get the right kind, stant 10504 and that should work. I use one for a few months, if check engine comes on disconnect battery for 15 minutes, that will remove the check engine light...make sure you screw the new cap all the way then lock!

Tell that to these TW members, that had vandals pour substances into the gas tanks.

The fill necks in our trucks are siphon proof so a locking gas cap really isn't needed unless you're worried someone is going to run by and start throwing crap into your gas tank.
If a thief really wants your gas, they're either going to break that gas cap off or just crawl under your truck and take it from the gas tank itself. Since most gas tanks are easily penetrable nowadays, it's easy to carry the tools needed to break into the gas system in either method.

My trucks outside 24/7 and occasionally our road gets some pranksters that create vandalism. I've had to replace my mailbox twice already once due to an m-80, and the other time some teenagers thought they were karate man kicking in mailboxes. Cops actually caught the little bastards. Years ago several vehicles on our road got moth balls, and sugar spilled in their gas tanks. I had a locking gas door on my tundra, and lucked out instead they got my neighbors subaru.

Agreed. I’m not worried about someone stealing my gas, i’m worried about some asshole putting something in my tank. $12 is cheap insurance for peace of mind.

I bought an ACDelco 12F20L cap.
